Giants optioned RHP Keaton Winn to Triple-A Sacramento.
There was virtually zero chance for Winn, who is still making his way back from last year’s elbow surgery, to break camp in the majors this spring, especially with Hayden Birdsong and Landen Roupp pitching exceptionally. The 27-year-old righty will head back to Triple-A as extra organizational depth to open the regular season.
Keaton Winn surrendered three runs — two earned — in two innings Tuesday in his start against the Rockies.
Winn struck out five, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Rockies off the board in the second. Given how impressive Hayden Birdsong and Landon Roupp have been in battling incumbent Kyle Harrison, there’s really no chance of Winn claiming a spot in the Giants rotation at this point. Still, he could be useful in middle relief if the team goes that route.
Keaton Winn pitched two scoreless innings with four strikeouts against the Royals on Saturday.
Winn’s return from ulnar nerve transposition surgery is going well, and he’s in the mix to step into the rotation if Kyle Harrison fails to secure his spot or someone gets hurt. The more likely scenario is that he heads to Triple-A for a spell, but he rates as a nice fallback, even if he did have a 7.16 ERA in 12 starts before going down last year.
Keaton Winn will undergo season-ending elbow surgery next week.
The right-hander will have an ulnar nerve transposition performed. He’ll miss the remainder of the 2024 season and it’s unclear when exactly he’ll be able to get a start on the 2025 campaign, but he shouldn’t miss as long as he would have if undergoing Tommy John surgery.
