Calvin Faucher got his second save with a flawless ninth Tuesday against the Reds.
Anthony Veneziano, Lake Bachar, Anthony Bender and Faucher all gave the Marlins scoreless innings tonight. Jesus Tinoco, who earned saves both Sunday and Monday, was probably unavailable for this one. Faucher and Tinoco both have two saves on the season. Bender, who has been the most effective of the trio, has one. We’re not sure any are truly worth rostering in mixed leagues at this point.
Calvin Faucher struck out one batter in a scoreless ninth for the save against the Nationals on Saturday.
After Anthony Bender pitched in two of the last three days and taking the blown save on Friday, Faucher was summoned to close it out in the ninth with a one-run lead against the Nationals. He worked a clean frame, striking out the final batter for his first save of the season. Despite his early struggles, Faucher could work his way into the closer role in Miami given the lack of options on the team.
Calvin Faucher surrendered three runs while getting two outs Monday against the Mets.
At least Faucher succeeded in making Anthony Bender’s day look worse. Bender worked a scoreless seventh and then remained in for the eighth, giving up a walk and an RBI double before being pulled with two outs. Faucher took over then and allowed the inherited run to score before finishing the inning. With Jesus Tinoco also struggling, Faucher and Bender look like the favorites for saves in Miami. We assume the Marlins prefer Faucher, though we’d say Bender is the better bet. It’s probably not worth messing with either in shallow leagues right now.
Calvin Faucher worked a perfect third inning for the Marlins against the Cardinals on Sunday.
Faucher is probably competing with Anthony Bender and Jesus Tinoco to open up as the Marlins’ primary closer. He has pitched three scoreless innings to date, but his velocity has been down; his two fastballs today came in at 93.6 and 93.4 mph, well off last year’s average of 96.0 mph. We didn’t have all that much faith in Faucher while he was throwing 96 mph, but he definitely needs to get that back in order to have a shot. Tinoco’s stock is also already down some this spring, so we’re boosting Bender, while also still hoping that maybe the Marlins can find a few million dollars to throw Craig Kimbrel’s way.
