Jhonny Pereda went 1-for-2 with a double and a pair of RBI on Thursday as the Athletics routed the Reds 12-1 in Cactus League competition.
The 28-year-old backstop smacked a two-run double as part of an 11-run uprising by the Athletics in the ninth inning of this one. If the Athletics opt against Tyler Soderstrom serving as the primary backup behind Shea Langeliers to begin the season, then Pereda could wind up with a bench spot on the team’s Opening Day roster. He’s hitting .304 (7-for-23) with a homer and five RBI so far on the spring.
Jhonny Pereda went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and a walk versus the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
The A’s appeared poised to have Kyle McCann again serve as Shea Langeliers’ backup this year, but when Pereda was DFA’d by the Marlins at the end of January, the A’s traded for him and bumped McCann from the 40-man. Pereda, 28, made his major league debut last year, hitting .231/.250/.231 in 40 plate appearances for Miami. He has the potential to offer a solid OBP for the A’s. Still, he’ll probably play less than most backup catchers, as Langeliers has been given heavy workloads to date.
Athletics acquired C Jhonny Pereda from the Marlins for cash considerations.
The Marlins had designated Pereda for assignment earlier in the week, so they were content to flip him for anything that they could get at this stage. The 28-year-old backstop slashed .231/.250/.231 with four RBI and a 10/0 K/BB ratio in his 40 plate appearances with the Marlins in 2024. He’ll add catching depth for the A’s.
Marlins designated C Jhonny Pereda for assignment.
Pereda, 28, was removed from the 40-man roster after the Marlins claimed Connor Gillispie off waivers from Atlanta. Pereda will now hit the waiver wire himself, and a team needing depth behind the plate could put in a claim.
