Giants optioned RHP Sean Hjelle to Triple-A Sacramento.
It’s another indication that spring standout Landen Roupp is going to make San Francisco’s season-opening roster since he projects to take over Hjelle’s long relief workload. The towering 27-year-old made a career-high 58 appearances last year for the Giants and figures to be back in the majors at some point in the near future.

Hjelle was away from the team while dealing with an issue more important than baseball for a few days. He had a 3.88 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 51 innings for the Giants this year. Hjelle will continue to pitch in long relief out of the bullpen for San Francisco.

The towering 26-year-old righty wrapped up a minor league rehab assignment earlier this week and returns ahead of Saturday’s showdown against the Diamondbacks. He figures to pitch in long relief out of San Francisco’s bullpen for now.
