Edwin Díaz will be sidelined six weeks after undergoing surgery on a fractured hamate bone in his left hand.

Díaz was in Astros' camp this spring as a non-roster invitee and obviously won't make the Opening Day roster now. The 26-year-old shortstop spent the last eight seasons in the Athletics' minor-league system.

Astros signed INF Edwin Diaz to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Diaz, 26, batted just .211/.295/.373 in 2021 in the minors, numbers which are right at his career rates as a pro. He can pick it defensively, though, and it capable of playing multiple positions.
