Fernando Cruz struck out two over two innings to get a save Wednesday against the Royals.
Yankees acquired RHP Fernando Cruz and C Alex Jackson from the Reds for C Jose Trevino.
The Yankees were known to be shopping some of their catching depth and wanted to get Trevino’s contract off the books, so being able to land an arm like Fernando Cruz in return seems like a huge win on their end. The 34-year-old hurler has never truly been able to harness his exceptional stuff, but his splitter registers as one of the top overall pitches in all of baseball. He’ll certainly have a major role in the Yankees’ bullpen in 2025.
Cubs signed SS Fernando Cruz.
The deal is worth $4 million. Cruz is known for his strength and ability to hit for power to all fields. He has tremendous bat speed, and despite being a free swinger, has good feel for the barre, which should allow him to grow into a 20-to-25 homer hitter as he matures. Cruz also has the frame and tools to hold down the shortstop position long-term.
