2025 Player Outlook

Helsley led the league with 49 saves last season, and he also recorded seven wins while posting a 2.04 ERA and 29.7 percent strikeout rate. His strikeout rate dipped below 30 percent for the first time since 2021, but increased usage of his slider led to more swings out of the zone, and the second-highest SwStr% (17.3%) of his career. His strikeout rate should rebound into the low-to-mid thirties in 2024, and again, you don’t have to be on the best team in baseball to rack up save opportunities. The veteran righty should be within the first three to five closers off the board on draft day, and rightfully so.

Ryan Helsley worked around a single to pitch a clean inning and earn the save on Friday against the Phillies.

There may not be a more trusted closer in the game right now than Helsley. Despite a lead-off single by Trea Turner that put the tying run to the plate, it took him just six pitches to retire Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Nick Castellanos to end this game. He pumped his regular 100 mph fastballs and the Phillies had no chance. He is solid as a rock at the back of the Cardinals’ bullpen.

Ryan Helsley blew his first save of the season, allowing two runs on one hit with four walks in one inning against Boston on Sunday.

Helsley was given a two-run lead by 10 of his first 11 pitches went for balls. He got Kristian Campbell to line out to center with two runners on and had two strikes on Romy Gonzalez, but then Gonzalez laced a double to score one. Helsley then walked Connor Wong to load the bases, struck out Jarren Duran, and walked Rafael Devers to tie the game. Just 16 of his 37 pitches went for strikes, but it was likely just a poor day for one of the better closers in baseball.

Ryan Hesley struck out three while allowing one hit in a scoreless inning to get the save against the Twins on Thursday.

Helsley struck out WIllie Castro and Jose Miranda before giving up a double to Harrison Bader. He was able to fan Matt Wallner to end the game and pick up his first — and almost assuredly not last — save of the season. Helsley was an elite closing option for the majority of 2024, and he should be one again in 2025.
