Sands leaves MLB after failing to land a spring training invite this offseason. He spent 2016 in the White Sox organization, hitting .236 with seven RBI in just 24 major league games. The utility man has been relatively ineffective over five seasons, posting a career batting average of .238.

Sands hit .236 with the White Sox before being place on waivers. He wasn't claimed so he's reporting to the Sox Triple-A affiliate. Sands struck out 24 times in 55 at-bats. He'll be lucky to appear in another major league game in 2016.

James Shields is expected to report to the White Sox Tuesday, after being traded to them on Saturday and with that, Chicago needs a spot on the roster. Sands is underwhelming with the bat but has good enough defense to make him interesting on the waiver wire. With a career mark under .240, he really isn't a notable outfielder.

Sands will step in to play at first against the Royals. Jose Abreu will take over at DH on Saturday, and Sands will slot in at cleanup, with Abreu hitting in the two hole.
