David Murphy retired from baseball on Monday at age 34.

Murphy didn’t make the Red Sox opening day roster and latched on with the Twins Triple-A team, but it appears he doesn’t want to ride buses in hopes to return to the big leagues. The 34-year-old finishes his career by playing 10 seasons in the big leagues and finishing with a slash line of .274/.333/.432 with 104 career homeruns and 54 stolen bases.

David Murphy exercised the out in his contract and is a free agent.

Murphy had yet to appear in a major league game and obviously is looking to be a part of a franchise that could use his services at the big league level. Murphy posted a .283 average in 361 at-bats in 2015 so his bat could still be of use somewhere, but it won't be in Minnesota.

David Murphy signed a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins Thursday.

Murphy brings a 10 years of big-league experience to the Twins' organization. The veteran outfielder posted a .283/.318/.421 slash line with 10 homers and 18 doubles across 391 plate appearances while spending time with the Indians and Angels last year. Murphy could become a viable option in A.L. Only leagues if he finds a regular role in Minnesota.

Red Sox have released David Murphy.

It was just Sunday when he let the Red Sox know that he would be using his opt-clause in the minor league deal he signed and now he has become a free agent. Boston was going to be a tough place for Murphy to crack the outfield roster with how crowded it is but now he will get a choice of where to sign, that is if any one wants him. Philadelphia is a team that could use an extra left-handed bat in the outfield since they are a little thin at that spot.
