Mariners signed C Pedro Severino to a minor league contract.
Severino was released last week by the Padres and has quickly found a new home in the Pacific Northwest. The 29-year-old backstop will serve as emergency catching depth at Triple-A Tacoma moving forward.

Severino has spent the entire season at Triple-A El Paso and has only played in four contests since April 25. The 29-year-old backstop, who served an 80-game suspension last season with the Brewers after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, has presumably been let go to pursue another opportunity. He's appeared in just eight games in the majors over the last two years.

The deal, which was first reported in mid-December, is now official. It's a split contract for Severino, who will earn $1.95 million this season, if he's added to the Padres' major league roster. The 29-year-old backstop served an 80-game suspension last season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance and wound up appearing in just eight contests for the Brewers. He'll compete for a backup catcher role in San Diego this spring in the Cactus League.
Robert Murray of Fansided reports that the Padres have reached an agreement on a split contract with catcher Pedro Severino.
According to Murray, it's a split contract that will pay Severino $1.95 million if he makes the big league roster. The 29-year-old also has the potential to earn an additional $550,000 in performance-based incentives. Severino saw just 21 plate appearances at the big league level in 2022 before he tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
