Miller has refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Memphis after being jettisoned from the Cardinals' 40-man roster. The 34-year-old righty registered a respectable 4.50 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 9/5 K/BB ratio across 16 innings over 18 relief appearances this season. He should be able to latch on as organizational relief depth this offseason.

Miller passed through waivers unclaimed earlier this week and has the option to refused the outright minor-league assignment and elect free agency. The move clears a spot for Jordan Hicks' return to the 40-man roster. Miller, 34, had a 4.50 ERA over 18 relief appearances with the Cardinals this season before going down with an elbow strain. 

It's unclear how long Miller will be sidelined at this juncture. The 34-year-old veteran reliever has posted an underwhelming 6.16 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 13/6 K/BB ratio across 19 innings with the Nationals and Cardinals this season.
