Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic reports that free agent right-hander Chris Tillman is expected to throw for scouts soon.

Tillman is coming off shoulder surgery from a few years ago and hasn't pitched in the majors since making seven starts for the Orioles back in 2018. The 34-year-old is reportedly attempting a comeback, and could wind up drawing some interest from teams this offseason, although he'll most likely be forced to settle for a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Tillman (groin) has been placed on the disabled list, Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Tillman is another reclamation project the Rangers are attempting, but it has not gone well. He allowed four runs in 2.2 innings before injuring his groin in his second start.

Tillman threw only 11 pitches in his start Tuesday at Triple-A Round Rock before exiting with a groin strain, the Associated Press reports.

Making his second appearance for Round Rock since inking a minor-league deal with Texas earlier in the month, Tillman recorded only one out and gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits and a hit by pitch. The right-hander was torched to the tune of a 10.46 ERA and 2.21 WHIP in his seven starts with the Orioles earlier this season and hasn't been much better in his minor-league cameos in the Baltimore or Texas organizations either. Now that he's also nursing an injury, it's beginning to look unlikely he'll receive another promotion to the majors before the 2018 season ends.

Tillman will make his debut for Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday, Wesley Dotson of MLB.com reports.

Tillman, 30, spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the Orioles before being granted his release from the organization July 27. He was 1-5 with a 10.46 ERA in seven starts for Baltimore this season. The Rangers are looking at him as a possible reclamation project with an eye toward having him in the starting rotation in 2019. The Rangers are bereft of pitching prospects at the higher levels of the system that are ready to jump into the rotation next season, so they are looking at guys like Tillman and Drew Hutchison as stop-gap measures during the team's rebuilding process.
