2013 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Week Eight

Is it just me, or are there more sub .200 hitters in mid-May than usual? Are you wondering what to do with B.J. Upton? Hoping Jason Heyward found himself while on the disabled list? Has Paul Konerko finally hit the wall? The resurgence of Adam LaRoche gives us hope that its a long season and the numbers usuallybalance out. Pitching is much more volatile with Kevin Slowey suddenly a disaster for your staff, while Jarrod Parker is finally delivering as many expected. Hang in there.... its a long way to October!

Have an iPhone or iPad? Get the #1 selling Fantasy Sports tool this season! Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2013 Fantasy Baseball App!

Pitching:

Joel Peralta Tampa Bay RP- Are the Rays finally giving up on Fernando Rodney? Peralta has solid numbers on the season, but struggled in two appearances late in the week, despite the save. Tampa coaches insist they aren't worried about Rodney.... yet. Peralta seems next in line, although Jake McGee could also be an option.

Koji Uehara Boston RP- Uehara picked up a save, but Andrew Bailey may return on Monday. Uehara only had a shot as Junichi Tazawa was held out due to multiple innings of work the night before. Even with the return of Bailey, Uehara has a sub 1 WHIP (0.90) and 23 strikeouts in 16 innings.

Vinnie Pestano Cleveland RP- Chris Perez had some discomfort, Pestano worthy of a shot? Pestano returned from the disabled list (elbow) on Friday and stepped right in for a win. Pestano has the stuff to close and at the very least, the way the Tribe is playing, stands to pickup some cheap wins.

David Hernandez Arizona RP- Will Heath Bell hold up? Hernandez is a solid option just in case. Hernandez has a long track record of reliability in short relief for the Diamondbacks and should be next in line when Bell falters. Hernandez hasn't given up a run since the first of the month and will pickup wins and holds while you wait.

David Phelps NY Yankees SP- Phelps has pitched well and Andy Pettitte's injury solidifies his spot in the rotation. Phelps has back to back quality starts and is averaging more than a strikeout per inning. His numbers on the season won't catch you, but this is a pitcher on the rise on a first place team.

Jorge DeLaRosa Colorado SP- As a rule of thumb, I stay away from Rockies pitchers, but DeLaRosa deserves a look. DeLaRosa was knocked around on Friday night, but he didn't allow a run in his two previous starts covering 13 innings. In nine starts this season, opponents were held scoreless in four of them.

Brandon McCarthy Arizona SP- Is he finally coming around after last season's unfortunate setback? McCarthy was cut in leagues nationwide after a horrible April. On Sunday against the Phillies, McCarthy scattered seven hits without a walk over eight shutout innings. I'd like to see him do it again, but he bears watching.

Chris Tillman Baltimore SP- One of the Birds young arms appears to have arrived! Tillman was roughed up Opening Week, but since then hasn't given up more than three runs in any of his starts. Tillman has allowed only 16 earned runs over seven starts, but has had control problems, issuing 20 bases on balls.

Hitting:

John Jay OF St.Louis- Jay realizes that he has Oscar Taveras looking over his shoulder. After struggling in April, Jay is raking at a .400 clip in May. Jay has added four home runs and 21 RBI and is the Cardinals only real defensive option in center field. Jay has only one steal thus far and figures to pick up the pace.

Gerardo Parra OF Arizona- Parra doing what it takes to remain a factor in a crowded Arizona outfield. Need average? Parra has been consistent all season long, currently at .327. Over the last twelve days, Parra is 18-for-43, only going hitless in one start. Parra doesn't bring big power or speed, but won't kill you either, on pace for double figures in both categories.

Andy Dirks OF Detroit- Finally achieving pre-season expectations? The Tigers remain reluctant to play Dirks against left handers, but he continues to rake against right handers. Over the past two weeks, Dirks is hitting .333 with three home runs, eight RBI and a couple of steals.

Kurt Suzuki C Washington- We know he is going to get lots of at bats, at least into June. Suzuki is a solid stop-gap, especially if you have Wilson Ramos. Suzuki may also be a good option if you have a part time backstop that just isn't getting the at bats. Suzuki sits at .296 on the season and is worth your while if he can maintain that clip.

Chris Carter 1B/OF Oakland- Lots of power if you can handle the strikeouts and low average. Carter continues to drive the ball with nine home runs and 22 RBI on the season. Make sure you can handle the average as he stands at .220 and leads the league in strikeouts on a pace of 230 on the season.

Brandon Belt 1B San Francisco- Finally coming around and brings usual speed to the position. Belt has reall been ripping the ball this week with a pair of home runs, six RBI and a .429 batting average. Despite the slow start, Belt has five home runs, 21 RBI and a couple of steals. Lots of upside here.

Omar Infante 2B Detroit- Not sexy, but reliable for your batting average. I made the mistake of trading Infante when he was cold and acquiring Daniel Murphy when he was hot. Murphy woke back up this week, but Infante has been white hot over the past month. How about a .341 average with three home runs, ten RBI and a pair of steals.

Marco Scutaro 2B/SS San Francisco- If someone in your league dropped him, grab him now! Scutaro not only brings eligibility at both middle infield positions, he is hitting like we expected. After a terrible start, Scutaro is hitting .359 over the past month with a homer and six RBI.

Listen to The Fantasy Alarm Show Tuesday-Friday 10 PM -1 AM EST on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio XM channel 87/Sirius 210. We want to hear from you! 888-XM-FANTASY (963-2682)

2013 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Week Seven

Believe it or not, by the end of this week, we will be at the quarter way point of the season. By now, you should have a pretty good idea of where you are strong... and where you are weak. Each week, I try to find that delicate balance between those in deep mixed or AL/NL only formats and those in 10-12 team mixed leagues. There is a huge difference in who is available and the level of player that can help your particular situation. I am staying away from the obvious pickups and adding a few gems for deeper or league specific formats.

Have an iPhone or iPad? Get the #1 selling Fantasy Sports tool this season! Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2013 Fantasy Baseball App!

Pitching:

Scott Diamond P Minnesota- Diamond was on the 15-day DL to start the season and was roughed up by the Mets in his first start on April 13th. Diamond is 3-0 in his four starts since, allowing only six runs and issuing only three walks! Diamond was very effective last season and looks to have found his groove, picking up where he left off.

Paco Rodriguez RP LA Dodgers- This is my "sleeper" pick of the week. I heard Don Mattingly mention in passing that Rodriguez deserved a role late in games. Brandon League is already looking over his shoulder with Kenley Jansen the closer in waiting. Rodriguez has five holds, with 15 strikeouts in a dozen innings and a minuscule .075 WHIP.

Phil Hughes P NY Yankees- Hughes was rocked by Kansas City on Saturday, but still picked up the win. It is Hughes three previous starts which lands him on our list. Hughes worked 20 innings over his previous three outings, allowing only two earned runs in each appearance. Hughes is still only 26 years old and logged nine strikeouts in his last two starts.

Scott Feldman P Chicago Cubs- Feldman caught everyone's attention on the first of May when he struck out a dozen Padres and scattered three hits on his way to a complete game win. On Monday, Feldman took a step towards silencing the doubters when he blanked the Rangers on two hits over seven innings. Despite it all, Matt Garza may bump him upon return.

Steve Cishek RP Miami- It's been a rocky road if you have been counting on Cishek as one of your closers this season. Cishek seems to have settled down a bit and the Marlins appear set on him in the role. Cishek closed out the Dodgers on Friday night for his fifth save and still has the strikeout pitch working with 14 k's in 13 innings of work.

Scott Kazmir P Cleveland- Like you, I was shocked to see that Kazmir was back in the majors. His first start at Houston on the 20th of last month was scary and may have had many crossing him off their list for good. In the three starts since the Astros drubbing, Kazmir has been good and getting better. Thursday's ten K, no walk performance was vintage.

Drew Smyly RP Detroit- I am not all the way in, but see the value of having at least one middle reliever on my roster. Opening Day was ugly for Smyly, but he followed up later in the week with a four inning save and has been solid since. Smyly has two wins, figures to get many more and sits with a 1.25 ERA and .83 WHIP in 22 innings of work over 11 appearances.

Francisco Liriano P Pittsburgh- He never really became the next Johan Santana, but Liriano has alot of talents and remains on the good side of 30. Liriano made his first appearance of 2013 on Saturday, worked into the sixth inning in a win over the Mets. Liriano struck out nine and walked only one, earning him a chance on rosters across roto land.

Hitting:

Kelly Johnson 2B Tampa Bay- Johnson's batting average has killed owners the past two seasons, but he has big time power for either your 2B or middle infield slot. Johnson is hitting a respectable .278 with five home runs and 18 RBI's on the season. Johnson has been hot of late, is developing multi position eligibility and is four of seven on stolen base attempts.

Jedd Gyorko 2B San Diego- With the return of Chase Headley, Gyorko has made the move from 3B to 2B. Gyorko's average is on the rise and he has gone deep twice this week. Gyorko is one of the Padres prized prospects and he appears to have solidified his spot in the everyday lineup. Keep an eye on the return of Logan Forsythe from the DL with foot injury.

Mitch Moreland 1B Texas- Those who have been patient with Moreland are being rewarded. Moreland started slow, but has been raking of late and has driven his average up to .287 on the season. Moreland hit roughly 15 homers and 50 RBI the past two seasons, but has six and 14 thus far and may be headed to career numbers with increased playing time.

James Loney 1B Tampa Bay- If you need average, Loney may be your man. My problem with picking up the former Dodger is he's not going to hit .381 (his current average) and he has virtually zero power. The Rays took a flyer on the 28 year old and delivering with runners in scoring position with 17 RBI on the season, but has only gone deep once.

Stephen Drew SS Boston- Steven Drew has been quietly one of the best offensive shortstops in baseball, at least if you are considering 2007-2010. Drew slipped in 2011 and Arizona sent him to Oakland. Brother J.D. was very popular in Beantown, so the Bosox took a shot. Drew has been white hot in May with a dozen hits, a couple of homers and eight RBI.

Oswaldo Arcia OF Minnesota- Isn't this what was expected from Aaron Hicks? The two prospects are playing side by side and its Arcia who is making a case to stay. Arcia has a dozen hits in May, with a home run and four RBI. The 22-year old switch hitter was absolutely destroying Triple-A pitching in the International League and has no plans of going back.

Will Venable OF San Diego- I was surprised at the number of leagues where Venable was available when I went to pick him up last night. Venable is a virtually lock for 25-30 steals and seems to be developing increased power. Venable has gone yard three times this week alone and has also added three stolen bases to his total over the past two games.

Ryan Doumit C Minnesota- Doumit is the perfect roto catcher... a catcher that doesn't play the position. With Joe Mauer firmly entrenched behind the plate, Doumit is serving as the Twins designated hitter. Doumit had a dreadful start, but is certainly heating up. The former PIrates backstop has seven hits this week and has gone deep on two occasions.

2013 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Week Six

Is it time to panic yet? We are still early enough in the campaign where players remain available that can possibly help you in the long term. This week we have a mixture of young, emerging talent mixed with veterans returning from the disabled list and the minors. There are long shots with upside and phenoms, either making their first appearance, or getting a second chance.

Have an iPhone or iPad? Get the #1 selling Fantasy Sports tool this season! Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2013 Fantasy Baseball App!

Pitching:

Kevin Gausman Baltimore- Rumors that he may soon get call already have many fantasy owners scrambling to make room. WIth the more highly regarded (by some) Dylan Bundy experiencing elbow discomfort, Gausman moves that much closer to "The Show:".

Dan Haren Washington- Haren struggled in the Spring and his 1-3 start that included six earned runs against Cincinnati during opening week, sent many owners to the waiver wire. This was the only want Haren was going to be available this route and he has turned it around. Back to back wins against the Reds and Braves is all I need to see.

Dan Straily Oakland- Straily's first start against Houston during Opening Week was so good, some owners stashed him away until he was recalled from the minors. Straily finally got the call again on Monday and was knocked out in the fifth by the Angels. Straily is highly regarded and if he can maintain a spot in the Oakland rotation, is well worth the get.

Ricky Romero Toronto- Romero was so bad in the Spring, he not only didn't make the ML roster, he was sent to High-A. Last season was awful, but remember Romero was a high draft pick and especially recall his 2011 campaign, 15-11 with a 2.92 ERA. 1.14 WHIP with 178 strikeouts. 2010 wasn't too shabby either and Romero is only 28 years old.

Matt Reynolds Arizona- JJ Putz is struggling.... is he old? injured? Kirk Gibson is staying with him for now, but who's next? David Hernandez has struggled and although Heath Bell has showed signs, remains too volatile for my liking. Reynolds has a pair of saves and a sparkling 15 innings with a WHIP of 0.47 while not allowing a run. Easy choice if it were up to me.

Carlos Martinez St.Louis- Many were happy to hear he go the call, but disappointed that it's for the bullpen. Martinez arrival as a starter may be delayed, but it's coming. Martinez was simply overmatching hitters in Double-A where he posted a 9-1 strikeout to walk ratio. Shelby Miller, Trevor Rosenthal and now Martinez, the Cards continue bringing the arms.

Hitting:

Nolan Arenado 3B Colorado- The "must have" player of the week, Arenado had a pair of strong performances in his Major League debut. Arenado went 3-for-6 with a home run on Monday night and posted another three hit game, adding an RBI on Friday night. The Rox dumped Chris Nelson on the Yanks, so Arenado is here to stay.

Ryan Raburn 2B Cleveland- Raburn just posted one of the greatest three game stretches in recent memory. Monday through Wednesday, Raburn was 11-for-13 with four home runs and nine RBI. An 0-for-5 on Friday night landed him on the bench on Saturday, but Raburn could provide some middle infield spark.. then again, that might have been half his season.

Jason Kubel OF Arizona- Many fantasy manager have lost sight of the fact that Kubel hit 30 home runs last season. Kubel is back after losing two weeks to injury, but has picked up where he left off. Kubel homered upon his return, his third of the season to go along with eight RBI, hitting at a .302 clip. The D-Backs OF is about to get crowded, but Kubel is secure.

Dee Gordon SS LA Dodgers- With Hanley Ramirez expected back, LA manager Don Mattingly said there were no plans to promote Gordon. Now, with Ramirez going down again, Gordon is expected to get the call. With Mark Ellis also hobbled by injury, Mattingly may have no choice. Gordon brings elite speed with a dozen SB's at Triple-A Albuquerque.

Brandon Barnes OF Houston- Need some speed? Houston is looking like they made the right move by keeping Barnes at the Major League level out of spring training. Barnes is 11-for-32 since getting regular playing time, with a home run, six RBI and a pair of steals. The 'Stros may have to find a permanent spot for him when Jason Maxwell returns from the DL.

Marcell Ozuna OF Miami- With Gincarlo Stanton on the shelf, the Marlins called up Ozuna who is loaded with power potential. The 22-year-old had spent much of his time in the low minors, but was off to a hot start at Double-A Jacksonville. Ozuna is 6-for-15 since getting the call, look for him to unload his first bomb this weekend

2013 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Week Five

It's that time of the week again! Time to save your team by adding the latest and greatest from the waiver wire! Keep in mind, every ten games of the MLB season is equivalent to just one game in a NFL season. As we prepare to head into May, we are already seeing solid veterans that were dropped early on, finally finding their way. When it comes to veterans, especially hitters, they aren't going to hit .200 or .400 and you need to play the peaks and valleys. If you are trading, trade 'em while their hot and get 'em while their not!

Have an iPhone or iPad? Get the #1 selling Fantasy Sports tool this season! Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2013 Fantasy Baseball App!

We have some new closers for your bullpen, some solid starting pitching that remains available and hitting help from a variety of positions!

Pitching:

Jose Valverde RP Detroit- That didn't take long. Valverde was lurking, still unsigned when the Tigers signed him and gave him the ball in the 9th. There is no reason he won't get 30+ saves the rest of the way, but it won't be without bumps. I like Bruce Rondon and believe Detroit will slowly work him towards the 8th inning role before taking over next season.

Kevin Gregg RP Chicago Cubs- Like Valverde, Gregg was unemployed last week. The Cubs have tried three relievers since the annual Carlos Marmol meltdown and may go back to any of them. For now, Gregg is two-for-two in save opportunities and Chicago will ride the hot hand. Make no mistake, at some point, Marmol will be given another chance.

Edward Mujica RP St.Louis- The Jason Motte injury has created a scramble in the Cards bullpen. Boggs is a disaster, so St.Louis turned to Mujica. So far, he has been lights out and should be a high priority closing on a solid, winning ballclub. I am big on Trevor Rosenthal and believe he will get a shot if he can perfect the setup role.

John Axford RP Milwaukee- The Brewers have their own Carlos Marmol in John Axford. Why is it these guys are terrible closing, then put them in the 7th or 8th inning and they are lights out? Jim Henderson has been getting the job done, but Axford appears poised to be given another opportunity to prove himself.

Patrick Corbin SP Arizona- I am kind of surprised the Corbin remains available in approximately 50% of leagues. Corbin has been solid in every start and was a high level prospect. The confidence the Diamondbacks had in Corbin allowed them to move Trevor Bauer and acquire shortstop Didi Gregorious... more on him below.

Tony Cingrani SP Cincinnati- Like Corbin, Cingrani remains readily available in many leagues and has performed at an elite level thus far. Need strikeouts? This is your man. Cingrani's strong starts have lit a fire under Mike Leake and Cingrani may just stick around in the rotation, even when Johnny Cueto returns from the disabled list.

Ross Detwiler SP Washington- Detwiler may just be the best left handed pitcher in Washington. Yes, Gio Gonzalez fans- Detwiler may be the top southpaw in the District. Detwiler has corrected his delivery, throwing across his body is now less pronounced. When the Nats bullpen gets it together, Detwiler will start piling up wins.

Justin Grimm SP Texas- If you were waiting for Grimm to prove himself twice, wait no longer. Seven shutout innings without issuing a walk is your proof. I jumped on Grimm after his first good start last week after a little research. Grimm was a fourth round pick out of the University of Georgia and fills the spot in the rotation vacated by the injured Matt Harrison.

Hitting:

Lorenzo Cain OF Kansas City- Often time, when we go to the wire we are taking a flyer on a hot player. Cain is my top priority pick of the week and may be a season long fixture in your lineup. Cain is white hot and just scratching the surface and is a superstar in the making in my opinoin. Cain has sufficient power and can run, if he is avialable, get him now!

Mark Ellis 2B LA Dodgers- Ellis is currently banged up, leaving the game Friday night with a strained quad. Over the last week, Ellis is hitting .458 with a pair of home runs and eight RBI. If you need some punch in the middle infield, this is your guy. The 35-year-old Ellis has displayed power in the past, including five consecutive double digit HR seasons with Oakland.

Kyle Seager 3B Seattle- Seager is in the midst of a 15-game hitting streak, hitting .412 with three home runs and eleven RBI over the last two weeks. The 25-year-old Seager was a solid prospect out of UNC, so there is no reason to doubt this will continue. Seager broke out in '12 with 20-86-13 and a .259 batting average. Solid corner man for your lineup.

Devin Mesoraco C Cincinnati- Mesoraco is my favorite catching prospect and I labored through the enitre 2012 season with him on my reserve roster. Thrust into the everyday role due to injury, Mesoraco may never give it up (at least I hope not). Mesoraco was a first round pick and has done everything necessary at the minor league level and is ready for next step.

Pedro Alvarez 3B Pittsburgh- People forget that Alvarez was the 2nd overall pick in the 2008 MLB draft, three selections before Buster Posey. A pair of upper deck homers on Thursday night caught everyone's attention and he had four on the week. Still hitting only .181 for the season, Alvarez did hit 30 bombs last season to go along with 85 RBI.

Nate McClouth OF Baltimore- Once a nice prospect, McClouth disappeared in recent years, due in part to injury. McClouth entered the '13 campaign as the fourth outfielder, but is playing his way into the every day lineup. McClouth is hitting .343 over the past two weeks, with four RBI and most importantly- five stolen bases. Need speed? This is your man.

Didi Gregorius SS Arizona- I keep reading that this guy can't hit.... but you know what? He keeps raking. Gregorious was beaned on Friday night and had to leave the ballgame, so that bears watching. The slick fielding shortstop has otherwise been torid in his opening week, hitting .407 with a pair of solo shots. A spot in lineup may be secure until Aaron Hill returns.

Steve Lombardozzi INF/OF Washington- A personal favorite of Davey Johnson, the Nats skipper announced that Lombardozzi would be playing everyday moving forward. His value to you comes in the eligibility he will accrue. I expect him to be qualified at everywhere but shortstop, catcher and centerfield in coming weeks.

2013 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Week Four

I cannot remind myself enough to ride out the studs because it's a long way to October. This applies much more to hitting than pitching, but if you spend alot of money or a high draft pick on a proven stud, remember... it is still April! With that in mind, if you can improve your roster or add to categories where you need help, the best pickups of the season do in fact come in April. I have already found myself picking up a player I had dropped prematurely and hope it is the last time. Now on to this week's waiver tips!

Have an iPhone or iPad? Get the #1 selling Fantasy Sports tool this season! Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2013 Fantasy Baseball App!

Our week four tip sheet features eight pitchers and eight hitters that should be on your radar. The prized pickup of the week is easily Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Tony Cingrani. Cingrani didn't disappoint in his much anticipated start on Thursday night, filling the rotation spot of the disabled Jose Cueto.

Pitching:

Tony Cingrani Cincinnati SP- Unhittable in Triple-A, Cingrini carried that success to "The Show" with a solid 2013 debut on Thursday night. Cingrini's only blemish was a Justin Ruggiano solo home run., On the evening, Cingrini allowed only five hits, struck out eight, while issuing three walks. Cingrini is in the Reds rotation to stay.

Ross Detwiler Washington SP- I have the opportunity to watch most every Nationals game and I believe Detwiler could be the most talented pitcher in the rotation not named Stephen. Detwiler has had three sparkling starts, posting an ERA of 0.90 and a WHIP of 1.00. The former first round pick has eleven strikeouts and three walks over 20 innings of work.

Edward Mujica St.Louis RP- Jason Motte, Mitchell Boggs, Trevor Rosenthal and now Edward Mujica is the latest closer for the Red Birds. A four out save against the Phillies on Thursday night had owners scurrying for the waiver wire across the land. It's a small sample size, but Mujica has a 7-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio, a sub 1.00 WHIP and an ERA of 1.42.

Joaquin Benoit Detroit RP- The Detroit bullpen is also a mess, especially with the possibility of Bruce Rondon and Jose Valverde looming. Phil Coke was the first out of the gate and now Benoit appears to be the favorite. Wednesday's save wasn't clean, but Benoit is also a popular choice. Five walks in eight innings is a concern and bears watching.

James Russell Cubs RP- Yet another confusing bullpen with the annual meltdown of Carlos Marmol. Kyuji Fujikawa showed promise, then promptly landed on the disabled list. Shawn Camp had a chance and was lit up. Cubs skipper Dale Sveum insists Russell won't be used to end games, but he is running out of choices. Kevin Gregg is also an option.

Kevin Slowey Miami SP- Slowey isn't getting any respect, but has allowed 1,1,2,1 earned runs in his four starts. Slowey has a surprising 15 strikeouts in 23 innings and a solid 1.90 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. Slowey is a favorite of the coaching staff. but his main drawback is a lack of run support, which has contributed to him failing to pickup a win thus far.

Wade Davis Kansas City SP- One of the slew of Tampa pitching prospects, Davis landed in Kansas City as part of the Wil Myers deal. Seven shutout innings of the white hot Atlanta Braves is enough by itself to warrant consideration. Davis was roughed up by the Phils in his first start, but hasn't allowed a run since, covering two starts.

Jose Quintana White Sox SP- Quintana showed flashes last season and appears to be the real deal. Against Toronto on Wednesday night, Quinata worked scoreless into the seventh, striking out seven Blue Jays in earning the win. Seattle lit him up in his first start, but he has been unscored up since, in a pair of starts.

Hitting:

Lucas Duda NY Mets OF- Duda was battling injury on Friday and wasn't even certain to see action. Not only did Duda play, but he hit a pair of bombs, off Nationals superstar Stephen Strasburg at that. Duda seems to be over his back ailments and now has five home runs and eight RBI on the season for the overachieving Metropolitans.

Chris Johnson Atlanta 3B- A throw in as part of the Justin Upton trade, Johnson has earned multi-position eligibility, thanks to the injury to Freddie Freeman. Johnson is raking at a .412 clip with a pair of home runs and seven RBI. Johnson is a safe pick, as he figures to settle back in at third base when Freeman is activated from the disabled list on Monday.

Yuniesky Betancourt Milwaukee INF- Never underestimate the value of multip-position players like Betancourt, who qualifies at 1st, 2nd and 3rd base. Betancourt went deep twice this week, including a grand slam on Tuesday. After breakout seasons in 2010 and 2011, Betancourt struggled last season, but is showing signs of bouncing back.

Josh Rutledge Colorado 2B/SS- Need help in the middle? How about a Colorado hitter that can fill either infield spot? Rutledge needs to work on contact, but has a pair of home runs and four stolen bases to his credit. After filling in at short stop for the injured Troy Tulowitzki last season, Rutledge has settled in as the Rox second sacker.

Zach Cozart Cincinnati SS- Cozart hit .385 for the week, after the Redlegs moved him up to the second spot in the order. The Great American Ballpark is arguably a more hitter friendly spot that even Coors Field. Cozart has four home runs, ten RBI with an average now hovering around the .250 mark.... and climbing.

Justin Ruggiano Miami OF- My favorite reserve outfielder in mixed leagues, Ruggiano is working his way towards a spot in front of Giancarlo Stanton in the Marlins batting order. Taking Aroldis Chapman deep on Friday night was special, and Ruggiano how has three bombs, to go along with nine RBI and three stolen bases.

Nate Schierholtz Cubs OF- The left haned hitting Schierholtz is quickly earning a spot as a regular corner outfielder for the Cubs. Still limited as part of a platoon, Schierholtz is hitting a crisp .326 with a pair of homers, eight RBI and a pair of stolen bases. Jerry Hairston still gets the nod against lefties, but that may be coming to an end.

Everth Cabrera San Diego 2B/SS- Accused of using perfornance enhancing drugs in the offseason, Cabrera is a major source of stolen bases. Cabrera also brings dual eligibility in the middle infield. Cabrera caught everyone's attention on Wednesday night with a 3-for-4 evening, which included a home run and a stolen base.

Listen to The Fantasy Alarm Show Tuesday-Friday 10 PM -1 AM EST on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio XM channel 87/Sirius 210. We want to hear from you! 888-XM-FANTASY (963-2682)

2013 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Week Three

As standings in your league begin to take shape, remember it's a LONG way to October. Waiver wire advise is a tricky venture, as every league is different. Are you in a mixed league? 10 teams? 16 teams? Do you use FAAB to bid on players? Are you in a keeper league? There are so many factors to take into account. What we do each week is bring to your attention players that should be on your radar, then you can evaluate from there as it applies to your particular setup.

Have an iPhone or iPad? Get the #1 selling Fantasy Sports tool this season! Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2013 Fantasy Baseball App!

Our list is a bit lengthy this week as we want to be sure you have something to work with after you eliminate players that were either taken at the draft/auction or have already been picked up in the first two weeks. If you are looking for names like Jeff Samardja, Matt Harvey, Dexter Fowler and the like, you won't find them here. If you don't know them by now, or they are still available in your league, you either are in a very small league or runnin' with folks that don't follow baseball.

Pitching:

Paul Maholm Atlanta- Maholm came into Nationals Park on Sunday and shutdown the Washington bats to complete the three game sweep for the Braves. Maholm has been around and along with Tim Hudson lends experience to the young Atlanta staff. Maholm has allowed ZERO runs this season, my only worry is what goes up... well you know the rest.

Jose Fernandez Miami- This guy has electric stuff and I am absolutely shocked at how many leagues he is still available. He is only 20 years old, had only pitched in the low minors and is on a inning count, but Fernandez is special. While he has yet to earn a decision, Jose has allowed but a single run over 11 innings, with 13 K's, while allowing only eight base-runners.

Shelby Miller St.Louis- In the Matt Harvey mold, Miller earned a spot in the rotation this Spring, much to the delight of those that follow top major league prospects. Miller is 2-0 with a sparkling 1.45 ERA. Miller was especially nasty on Friday night, tossing seven innings of one-hit ball while striking out eight and not issuing a walk. Get him now!

Garrett Richards LA Angels- It took the injury to Jared Weaver for Richards to get a spot in the rotation, but Richards may never give it up. The former number one draft pick got a taste of the bigs each of the last two seasons, but appears here to stay. Richards was brilliant on Saturday in his first start, tossing three hit ball into the seventh.

Patrick Corbin Arizona- The Diamondbacks have are strong in finding and developing pitchers, so much so that they can afford to ship the likes of Max Scherzer and Trevor Bauer to other teams. Corbin leads the next group and was lights out on Friday night to the tune of six shutout innings of three hit ball against the Dodgers.

Kelvin Herrera Kansas City- Looking for some cheap saves? It's nearly impossible to find a Craig Kimbrel or Aroldis Chapman after draft day, but a closer in waiting like Herrera can help you fill out that saves column. Everyone was riding Greg Holland, but Herrera has nasty stuff. Don't be surprised if the job is his full time by July.

Trevor Rosenthal St.Louis- Rosenthal is my personal favorite of all this week's talent. Something about that 100+ mph fastball that equals outs in my opinion. Lots of missed bats and a bullpen that's a mess. Not only is the Cards relief corps missing Jason Motte, the next in line- Mitchell Boggs- is like kerosene on a camp fire. Rosenthal IS the next great closer.

Andrew Bailey Boston- Remember when Josh Reddick was on the Red Sox? Maybe you don't because he didn't break out until he got to Oakland. Well, Andrew Bailey is who the A's gave up to get the long haired, power hitting outfielder. With Joel Hanrahan not able to get anyone out and also nursing an injury, here comes Bailey to the rescue!

Alfredo Figaro Milwaukee-OK, here is my super sleeper. So much so, I haven't gone to him yet in any of my leagues. For now, Jim Henderson is the closer in Milwaukee. K-Rod (Francisco Rodriguez) is gone and as Charles Barkley says, John Axford is "turrible". Who is Figaro you ask? He's been in Japan, but is now the Brewers next closer.

James Russell Chicago Cubs- Which bullpen is worst? Milwaukee or the Cubs? Carlos Marmol is in his annual funk. Kyuji Fujikawa looked promising, but he's now on the DL. That leaves Shawn Camp or James Russell. Russell is our choice, the 27 year old left hander has nasty stuff and has not been scored upon in six appearances with five strikeouts.

Hitting:

John Buck NY Mets C- Chris Davis, Justin Upton and John Buck? Which name doesn't fit with the others? Yes, Buck has been carrying not only the Mets offense, but fantasy teams across the land as well. Buck's six home runs and 19 RBI are allowing the Mets to take their time with super prospect Travus d'Arnaud.

Evan Gattis Atlanta C- If you were wondering if Gattis is the real deal, he is! I went to Saturday's Braves-Nationals game and witnessed Gattis tomahawk a 96 mph Stephen Strasburg fastball at the letters half way to Pennsylvania Avenue. Brian McCann will be back soon, but the Braves will find a spot for Gattis in the lineup.

Jean Segura Milwaukee SS- Segura has been white hot out of the gate, hitting over .400. Don't worry about the game he missed last Monday, he was given a precautionary day off after a hard slide last weekend. The 23-year old Dominican is much more than a stop gap and is a must have in keeper leagues.

Matt Carpenter St.Lous 1b/3b/OF- The Cardinals just keep rolling out stud hitters. The latest is Matt Carpenter, hitting .333 with a homer and six RBI. Carpenter should be on your wish list as a 1b/OF, but he also qualifies at 2b- where he can start for any fantasy team. At 27 years old, the left handed hitting Carpenter is just approaching his prime.

Chris Carter Houston 1b/OF- Could this finally be the year that the big-time power hitting prospect has a breakout season? The 26 year old Carter is 6-4, 245 pounds and put on a power display on Tuesday and Wednesday night when he went a combined 7-for-11, with three home runs and five RBI. Need power? This is your man!

Daniel Murphy NY Mets 2b- Murphy is easily one of the biggest surprises of the young 2013 season, hitting at a blistering. 381 clip with a pair of home runs and 11 RBI. The 28 year old left handed hitter when 4-for-5 on Friday night with four RBI. I am so confient in Murphy that I cut Howie Kendrick to pick him up!

Matt Adams St.Louis 1b- The ONLY question mark surrounding Adams is where is he going to play? The Cards have found time for the 24 year old left handed power hitting three times in the last six days and he rewarded them with home runs in each start. Adams is hitting at a ridiculous .643 clip, but remains a man without a full-time position.

Jed Lowrie Oakland SS- Are you looking for a shortstop or middle infielder? If you are in luck, Lowrie has somehow slipped through the cracks. Lowrie has been a major part of Oakland's swift start, hitting at a .375 clip with three home runs and eight RBI. Lowrie showed signs of breaking out last season, hitting 16 bombs with the Astros.

Mark Reynolds Cleveland 1b- Whether it be Arizona or Baltimore, Reynolds is known as the Dave Kingman of this era... strikeout or homerun... or bust. Now with Cleveland, Reynolds is displaying the same great power (Five home runs and 13 RBI) but is also hitting a respectible .263 at this early juncture. Reynolds= Power.

Omar Infante Detroit 2b- Need a quick plug and play in the middle? Omar Infante may be your man. A steady presence in the powerful Detroit lineup, Infante hits for consistent average and will have plenty of RBI opportunities. Infante is hitting .333 with four RBI and while he won't bring big power and speed, he is quite reliable.

2012 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Expansion Bonanza

With rosters expanding from 25 to up to 40 players, the waiver/free agent pool has grown considerably in fantasy leagues. Teams have brought up veterans to provide depth in pennant races, while clubs that are looking to next year take a look at prospects. With fantasy races coming down to the wire, its important to judge just who is going to get quality playing time in September. Texas teenage phenom Jurickson Profar is clearly the cream of the crop, already contributing, the infielder has a huge future. Stephen Strasburg has two starts left, Washington brings up his replacement and a surge of players return from the disabled list.

Have an iPhone or iPad? Get the #1 selling fantasy football tool this season! Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Football App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Jurickson Profar Texas INF- A natural shortstop, Profar is already starting for the Rangers. Profar is filling in at second base for the injured Ian Kinsler and began his major league career with a home run. Arguably the top non-pitching prospect in the game, Profar hit .281 in Double-A, with 14 home runs, 62 RBI and 16 steals. Where will Profar fit in the long run? Elvis Andrus and Kinsler are young and entrenched in the middle, could Profar fit at 3B? not likely as long as Adrian Beltre is raking. The best bet may end up with Profar in the outfield. If he is available in your league, get him now, I sure did.

John Lannan Washington SP- We finally have specifics on the Stephen Strasburg shutdown. Strasburg will make two more starts, the final coming a week from Wednesday on September 12th. Manager Davey Johnson plans on inserting John Lannan into Strasburg's spot in the rotation. A former opening day starter for the Nats, Lannan has pitched well in two spot starts this season. Lannan 2-0 in 13 innings of work with a 3.46 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. Lannan had pedestrian numbers in Triple-A, but is a proven major league starter.

Josh Collmenter Arizona SP- Collmenter returns after four weeks on the disabled list. With Arizona working with the youth movement in the rotation, Collmenter may begin in long relief. Collmenter has 22 appearances this season with the D-Backs, nine of them starts. Collmenter is 3-3 with a 4.24 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Josh has done an excellent job missing bats with 69 strikeouts in 74 innings while issuing only 18 walks. Keep and eye on Tyler Skaggs and Patrick Corbin, if either falter, or reach an innings limit, Collmenter will be first man in.

Shelby Miller St.Louis SP- Miller remains one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball. Not yet up with the parent club, the Cardinals plan on activating him at some point this week. Miller began the season slowly at Triple-A Memphis, but has been lights out in the season's second half. Over his last 60 innings, Miller has a 2.88 ERA and a phenomenol 70/7 strikeout to walk ratio. Plans are to use him in long relief, then give him a look, possibly in Joe Kelly's spot in the rotation.

Xavier Avery Baltimore OF- Avery has had several brief stints with the O's this season and figures to get time at all three outfield positions. Manager Buck Showalter has hinted that Avery could get time in left field in place of Nate McLouth. Avery has 90 at bats this season with Baltimore, hitting .233 with a homer, six RBI and six stolen bases. Avery needs to improve his on base percentage to get full time work, hitting only .233 at Triple-A Norfolk. Avery is solid defensively and on the base paths, adding 22 steals in the minors.

A.J. Griffin Oakland SP- If Griffin has slipped through in your league, grab him. Griffin has quietly posted arguably the top numbers of any rookie pitcher. In nine starts, Griffin is 4-0 in 52 innings of work. The 24 year old right hander has an ERA of 2.26 and an even more miniscule WHIP of 0.89! Griffin has a four to one strikeout to walk ratio and is currently the number five starter in a very solid A's rotation. Griffin missed the entire month of August due to injury, but proved Saturday in Boston he is ready to dominate.

2012 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Sept 1 Expansion

As we move into September and football season gears up, sometimes its hard to keep focus. By keeping your focus, you can pickup those points you need and make a move in the standings. We have half a dozen prospects for you, in advance of the 40 man expansion this weekend, Let the other guys focus on the running backs by committee, while you pickup the gamechangers.

Have an iPhone or iPad? Get the #1 selling fantasy football tool this season! Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Football App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Drew Storen RP Washington- I watch most of the Nationals games, and my tip of the week is Drew Storen. Storen's nasty stuff is returning to the upper-90's and his return to closing could be drawing near. Even if he settles into a setup role, Washington has been the comeback kings this season and this could mean cheap wins for your team. Manager Davey Johnson has been masterful in his use of the bullpen and with all the weapons he has at his disposal, expect him to continue to use Storen in more critical situations.

Casey Kelly SP San Diego- A great start for the Padres top prospect. Shutting out the Braves for six innings will secure him a spot, expecially with rosters expanding to 40 this weekend. The 22 year old Kelly who was called up from Double-A for the start, limited Atlanta to just three hits, while striking out four. Kelly had missed much of the season wiith elbow problems, but showed enough in a trio of Double-A starts this month to get the call.

Joaquin Arias 2B San Francisco- Could Arias be emerging at age 27? A long time prospect in Texas, Arias is now in San Francisco after a season with the Mets. Arias is hitting .282 over 255 at bats, with three home runs and four stolen bases. Arias isn't going to win a category for you, but he has growth potential and will probably qualify at multiple infield positions.

Steve Johnson SP Baltimore- Who is this guy? Johnson picked up his second strong start of the season, limiting Toronto to four hits and two runs, while striking out seven.Johnson's first start came several weeks ago, striking out nine Mariners in six innings of work. The 24 year old Johnson has dominated Triple-A, with a 2.85 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 91 innings at Norfolk.

Andy Dirks OF Detroit- Dirks has been been solid since returning from the disabled list earlier this month. Dirks has been getting regular playing time of late, going 25 of 73 at the plate since his return. On the season, Dirks has 5 home runs, 26 RBI with a 333 average in 207 at bats. The 26 year old Dirks has added a much needed left handed bat to the Tigers lineup.

Brett Anderson SP Oakland- If you were waiting to see if Anderson was back, wait no longer. Hopefully, the crafty left hander is still available in your league. In two starts since recovering from Tommy John surgery, Anderson looks like his old self. Anderson has worked seven innings in both starts, allowing only four baserunners in each starts, both wins. Over the 14 innings, Anderson has 11 strikeouts, with only two walks.

Andrew Bailey RP Boston- Need a closer? Boston fans are saying its about time, but much too late to help save this season. After missing more than four months following thumb surgery, Bailey is in the Bosox bullpen. The Red Sox were counting on Bailey to fill the loss of Jonathan Papelbon to Philadelphia, but the 'pen has struggled all season long. Bailey picked up his first save of the night on Friday and figures to get the bulk of work here on out.

2012 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Jeremy Guthrie and Hisashi Iwakuma

After several weeks highlighted by elite prospects getting the call, things settling down a bit. The Jurickson Profar watch continues, while many are awaiting the return of Brett Anderson who is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and is expected to return this week! Five starting pitchers on the menu in this week's edition of Waiver Flavor, along with two middle infielders and an outfielder.Only six weeks remain in the regular season, make every move count!

Have an iPhone or iPad?
Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Jeremy Guthrie SP Kansas City- If you are looking to ride a hot hand... look no further. Guthrie held the White Sox hit-less into the 7th on Sunday, allowing only two unearned runs in seven and two thirds. Guthrie has been masterful since getting bounced for six runs at Seattle on July 27th. In four starts since, Guthrie has allowed only three earned runs and 17 hits in 29 innings of work. Guthrie also has an impressive 23/5 strikeout to walk ratio in August.

Hisashi Iwakuma SP Seattle- Since moving into the rotation on the second of July, Iwakuma has been a Seattle secret. Iwakuma has allowed only 17 earned runs in eight starts, with an impressive 41-17 strikeout to walk ratio. Iwakuma's success as a starter comes despite having to make a trip to Japan to spend time with his ailing Father. Seattle gambled with a one year, incentive laden contract with Iwakuma after a solid season overseas.

David Phelps SP NY Yankees- Who is this guy? The 25 year old had been working out of the bullpen, when given a chance in the rotation with CC Sabathia on the DL. Phelps has posted a pair of solid starts, allowing five earned runs on 13 hits in 12 innings of work. Phelps has struck out ten and walked only one. In 63 innings this season, Phelps has an ERA of 2.69 and a 1.15 WHIP.

Kris Medlen SP Atlanta- Another reliever turned starter, Medlen joined the Braves rotation at the end of July and has won all four starts. In 26 innings, Medlen has allowed 19 hits and only three earned runs. An impressive 19-3 strikeout to walk ratio should land him on your watch list. Medlen takes the hill on Wednesday at Washington in a crucial series between NL East contenders.

Kyle Kendrick SP Philadelphia- As the Phillies dismantle a high-priced, aging squad, Kendrick appears a prime candidate to remain in the rotation during the transition. The 27 year old right hander has posted back to back gems, not allowing an earned run in 15 innings of work. Kendrick struck out 13 in the two starts, while walking only one. Kendrick, along with Cole Hamels and Vince Worley figure atop the Phils new look rotation in '13.

Luis Cruz SS LA Dodgers- Cruz has really helped ease the pain without Dee Gordon. In 38 games, Cruz has four home runs, 25 RBI and a .286 average, Although Cruz had excellent numbers in Triple-A when called up, he was expected to be a stop gap. Cruz can also fill in at 2B and 3B as the Dodgers continue to work Hanley Ramirez at both SS and 3B. As for Gordon, he continues to recover from torn thumb ligaments, but isn't expected back until September.

Leonys Martin OF Texas- If you are like me, you saw the Texas transaction and were hoping it was going to be the call-of of Jurickson Profar. Martin continues to bounce back and forth between AAA and the Rangers,. Texas is very high on the 24 year old Cuban who has played very well at AAA, but has struggled in brief appearances in the majors. At Round Rock of the Pacific Coast League, Martin is hitting .344 with five home runs, 22 RBI and seven steals in 31 games.

DJ LeMahieu 2B Colorado- The second time around has proven to be the charm for LeMahieu. In late Spring, LeMahieu hit .205 in 19 games before getting sent back down to Triple-A, Colorado Springs. LeMahieu was called back up in mid-July, but served mostly as a utility infielder. LeMahieu got his shot on August 8th, when he was inserted into the starting lineup. In ten starts since, LeMahieu hit his first home run and has collected five RBI. In 33 at bats since moving into a starting role, LeMahieu has been white hot with 15 hits.

2012 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Jurickson Profar

I hope you were able to take advantage of Manny Machado's surprise call up last week and he is now safely on your roster. Obviously, it is now too late to get Machado, but you just happen to be in luck. Texas appears on the verge of calling up sensation Jurickson Profar, arguably an even bigger prospect that Machado. We have a pair of starting pitchers this week, two Colorado Rockies worthy of a look and the closer of the week.

Make sure and get Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Baseball iPhone App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Brett Anderson SP Oakland- After a 60-day stint on the disabled list with elbow problems, Anderson appears on rehab start away from returning to the A's. Anderson, who underwent Tommy John surgery last July, has four rehab starts under his belt with an ERA of 3.93. With a career ERA of 3.66, Anderson should be on your short list.

Jurickson Profar SS Texas- Will Profar make the jump from Double-A as Machado did a week ago? The Rangers are operating with only three bench players, with Michael Young the only backup infielder. Profar is the Rangers top prospect and among the top five in all of baseball. Profar has 13 home runs, 60 RBI, 15 steals and a .283 average in 110 games. If you are allowed to stash a minor leaguer, do it now, otherwise watch the transactions and grab him when he gets called up.

Dale Thayer RP San Diego- Houston Street is on the disabled list and Thayer appears to be settling in as San Diego's temporary closer. Thayer closed out the Braves on Monday night on ten pitches for his sixth save of the season, his first since Street was disabled. The 31-year-old Thayer is 2-2 on the season with a 3.51 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP.

DJ LeMahieu 2B Colorado- LeMahieu is quickly emerging as an option at either 2B or 3B with eleven hits over his past five games, including four on Monday night. LeMahieu has homered and drove in five runs in the mini streak. On the season, LeMahieu has the one home run, eight RBI and a stolen base, while hitting .302 over 86 at bats.

Alex Cobb SP Tampa Bay- Cobb has been lights out over his past four starts, covering the past two weeks. Cobb has allowed just six earned runs in four starts, each lasting seven innings. Cobb has a 21/3 strikeout to walk ratio and has allowed only 21 hits over the 28 innings of work.

Eric Young OF Colorado- Young has been absolutely raking over the past ten days, with seven multi-hit games in eight starts. Young has an amazing 22 hits in 37 at bats since taking over a starting role on the fourth of August. On the season, Young has two home runs, 11 RBI and 13 stolen bases, while hitting .309 in 152 at bats.

It's never too early to be prepared. Check out our 2012 Fantasy Football Player Rankings right now!!

2012 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Manny Machado

In what has been a great second half of young talent arriving at The Show, the Baltimore Orioles have called up future superstar Manny Machado from Double-A. Has the early success of Mike Trout and Bryce Harper encouraged clubs to call up their top young talent? Machado projects as the next great shortstop in Major League baseball and must be secured at all costs. While young arms have been getting their shot often, the addition of Mike Olt in Texas and now Machado, are early presents for those fortunate enough to land them.

Make sure and get Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Baseball iPhone App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Manny Machado SS Baltimore- In a surprise move, the Orioles bring up the future of the franchise. 20-year-old Manny Machado gets the call from Double-A Bowie, where he hit eleven home runs and drove in 59 in 109 games. The third overall pick in the 2010 draft, Machado is a natural shortstop, but could be destined for third base, at least initially. Machado is considered the #11 prospect in the game according to Baseball America. Machado was a South Atlantic League All-Star in 2011 and played in the Futures Game last month. Machado is the real deal and projects as the next great shortstop in baseball.

Mile Olt Utility Texas- If your league is shying away from Olt due to his current platoon arrangement, you need to grab him now! With Adrian Beltre entrenched at third base, Olt had been playing first in the minors to prepare for his current role with the Rangers. Olt is two for nine in four games since getting called up from Double-A Frisco. Olt has big time power, as evidenced by 27 home runs in 94 games in the minors this season. Expect Olt's role to expand and also see time in left field. Fantasy owners truly blessed to have talent like Machado and Olt arrive mid-season.

Dominic Brown OF Philadelphia- Dominic Brown remains a favorite project of mine. We are told Brown will play every day which greatly enhances his value. Brown has power and speed potential, but has yet to show either since getting called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. In eight games, Brown is seven for 24 with a pair of RBI. Brown didn't fare well when given a chance last season and has fought injuries at the minor league level in 2012. Bottom line....Brown figures to be the Phillies long term option in center field and is worthy of a long look.

Brett Jackson OF Chicago Cubs- During most any summer week, Brett Jackson would be the headline transaction. Called up Sunday from Triple-A Iowa, Jackson showed power (15 home runs) and speed (27 stolen bases) in the minors this season. The Cubs are in full rebuild mode and Jackson should be given ample opportunity to show his stuff. Jackson is two for eleven in three games since getting the call. Jackson needs to cut down on strikeouts, but is the future of the Cubs outfield.

Jim Henderson RP Milwaukee- With so much hitting arriving on the scene, we were going to focus on bats but cannot let a potential closer go unmentioned. The mess also known as the Milwaukee bullpen has a new option in Jim Henderson. Unlike our elite hitting prospects featured this week, Henderson isn't a can't miss youngster. Turning 30 this Fall, Henderson was called up from Triple-A two weeks ago. Henderson did post stellar numbers at Nashville with a 1.69 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 48 innings. What is most important though, is clean saves against the mighty Reds each of the last two nights.

It's never too early to be prepared. Check out our 2012 Fantasy Football Player Rankings right now!!

2012 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Matt Harvey and Starling Marte

Some great options this week for those looking to tweak their roster. A pair of huge prospects, Matt Harvey and Starling Marte, got the call and are giving every indication that they may be here to stay. The closer of the week is John Axford in the the Milwaukee revolving door bullpen. A catcher is worthy of a look due to injury and is one of a trio of Blue Jays on our radar. Finally we have a very young target (Luis Cruz) and a very old (Eric Chavez) that are already helping fantasy teams nationwide.

Make sure and get Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Baseball iPhone App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in are Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Matt Harvey NY Mets- Unlike many prospects of late, Harvey matched the hype in his debut on Thursday night. Harvey worked into the sixth inning with a franchise rookie record of eleven strikeouts. Harvey scattered three hits and didn't allow a run at Arizona. Harvey is a big time prospect and needs to be atop your priority list.

Chris Tillman Baltimore- The Orioles have a handful of excellent young pitching prospects and Tillman has joined Zach Britton in the rotation. Tillman was spectacular on the 4th of July in advance of a quick trip to the minors during the break. Tillman returned to the rotation with a pair of impressive wins and seems very worthy of a long look.

John Axford Milwaukee- The Brewers experiment of moving Francisco Rodriguez back to the closer role failed miserably. Temporarily in a setup role, Axfford had five scoreless appearances over the last week before blowing up Sunday against Washington. For now, he is the man in a very shaky situation.

Starling Marte Pittsburgh- If there is any chance Marte is still avaialble in your league, you need to grab him.... now. Marte stormed onto the scene with a pair of hits and a solo home run in his debut on Thursday night. Marte added a pair of hits on Sunday and is the everyday left fielder for the surprising Pirates.

Eric Chavez NY Yankees- With A-Rod disabled, we figure Chavez will get the bulk of the at bats, especially against right handed pitching. Chavez was hit by pitch (right shin) on Friday night, but isn't expected to miss any time. Injuries have plagued the 34 year old, but he is clearly capable of delivering on a short term basis.

Travis Snider Toronto- Snider, one of a trio of Toronto players on this week's edition of Waiver Flavor is getting regular at bats in left field. We need to add a disclamour that when Jose Bautista returns, Colby Rasmus is the only outfielder that remains safe. Snider had an excellent week with three home runs, eight RBI and six hits.

Jeff Mathis Toronto- J.P.Arencibia is expected to miss six weeks with a broken hand, opening things up for Mathis. Mathis has five hits and five RBI over the past five games. If your pitching needs help, Mathis can also help out there, making his second appearance of the season on Wednesday night.

David Cooper Toronto- The Blue Jays have turned again to the former first round pick with Adam Lind landing on the disabled list. Cooper had been productive at AAA Las Vegas with ten home runs, 52 RBI and a .314 average over 261 at bats. Cooper was up for 24 games earlier this season with a pair of home runs, six RBI and a .292 average.

Luis Cruz LA Dodgers- Things promise to get crowded when Dee Gordon returns, but for now Cruz is the man at shortstop at Chavez Ravine. Cruz has a twelve game hitting streak, with two homers, a dozen RBI and a .300 average. Hanley Ramirez figures at third base long term and with the play of Cruz, short term as well.

Brett Wallace Houston- We have been puzzled why Wallace keeps getting sent back to Oklahoma City, but he is back in The Show. Wallace was raking in AAA with 16 home runs and 56 RBI. The Astros have a minor league lineup and Wallace should get plenty of at bats at both first and third, especially with Chris Johnson shipped off to Arizona.

2012 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Tim Lincecum and Cody Ross

A new week and eight new players for your review. We have four pitchers, including former All-Star Tim Lincecum who inexplicably lost his way in the season's first half. Our featured reliever seemed to be banished to setup for life, but K'Rod is again the man! Our four hitters include a white hot veteran and our sleeper pick of the week.

Make sure and get Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Baseball iPhone App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Tim Lincecum/San Francisco- Is Lincecum turning the corner? For the first time since April, he made excellent starts in back to back appearances. Eleven strikeouts in eight shutout innings against the Houston Astros, followed up by seven solid innings and another win, this time at Philadelphia. If you are in a league that gave up on him, he is certainly worthy of a look. If someone already has him in your league, you may want to make a low ball offer.

Francisco Rodriguez/Milwaukee- The Brewers weren't kidding when the announced the move of K-Rod into the closer's role. Rodriguez worked four straight days last week, unusual for a short reliever, or any pitcher. Rodriguez picked up saves in the last two appearances, but was very shaky in the last, issuing three walks. The club insists that John Axford will eventually be tried in the role again at some point, and Francisco's name is often mentioned in trade rumors.

Cody Ross/Boston- Wow, talk about the player of the week! Ross with a pair of three run homers on Wednesday, adding another on Thursday, of the walk off variety to beat the White Sox. Although Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia are all back in the lineup, Ross will maintain a spot as long as he stays hot. In only 234 at bats, Ross has 16 home runs, 50 RBI and a .269 average. Things may tighten up when David Ortiz returns, but for now Ross can carry a team.

Travis Snider/Toronto-With Jose Bautista landing on the DL, the Jays are taking a look at rookie Anthony Gose as well as Travis Snider. Is Snider a AAAA player? Too good for Triple-A, but unable to make it at the major league level? Snider raked in 56 games at Las Vegas, 13 home runs, 56 RBI with a .335 average in 209 at bats. Snider has hit in all three games since getting called up, including a three run home run on Sunday.

Josh Collmenter/Arizona- Prized rookie Trevor Bauer was sent back down, creating an opportunity for Collmenter. In nine appearances since Memorial Day weekend, Collmenter posting an ERA off 0.89, a 1,12 WHIP and 32 strikeouts over 30 innings of work. Collmenter returned to the rotation on Sunday, picking up the win while allowing only two runs and issuing only one walk. In three July starts, Collmenter has allowed only only five runs and issued only three walks.

Roger Bernadina/Washington- The Ian Desmond injury may create more playing time for Bernadina. How you might ask? Well, Steve Lombardozzi who has been playing alot of outfield will now play second base full time with Danny Espinosa sliding over to shortstop. Rick Ankiel has also been cut loose, spelling playing time for Roger, certainly against right handed pitching. In three starts last week, Bernadina was a blistering 10-for-16 with four RBI and two steals.

Fernando Salas/St.Louis- The Cardinals bullpen is struggling in a big way. St.Louis has blown 14 saves, an ERA of 4.37 and only nine wins in 24 decisions. I have been keeping my eye on Fernando Salas this month, nine strikeouts in nine and a third winnings of work, he hasn't allowed a run and has issued only three walks. The Cards aren't using him in crunch time, evidenced by him not posting a decision in those eight appearances. Just a reminder, last season Salas had 24 saves, with an ERA of 2.28 and 0.95 WHIP.

Ryan Flaherty/Baltimore- Brian Roberts and Robert Andino are both on the DL, creating an every day role for Ryan Flaherty. Flaherty has good pop for a middle infielder and showed it with home runs on Friday and Saturday. A one time first round draft pick, the left hander is 6-3, 220 and could be a source of unexpected power. Flaherty hasn't contributed much this season, this is a "sleeper" pick based on potential playing time due to injury and going deep in back to back games.

2012 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: Ben Sheets, Lance Berkman and more

As we move head long into the second half, we hope you are still alive in your pennant race. This week's edition of Waiver Flavor features two veterans who could go a long way helping you climb in the standings. After two years away, Ben Sheets has returned home to the South and may be the shot in the arm that Atlanta needs. In St. Louis, the Cardinals get Lance Berkman back, which should help Carlos Beltran and give Matt Holiday a little help in carrying the club.

Make sure and get Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Baseball iPhone App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Delmon Young Detroit- Home runs in four straight games heading into the All-Star break should have caught your attention. Young is healthy, should have left field locked down all to himself and projects for a nice second half. The only problem is will there be any runners left on base after Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera do their thing?

Lance Berkman St. Louis- Eager to get back in the pennant race, Berkman skipped a brief minor league rehab stint and is back in the Cardinals lineup. Berkman was seen running out an infield single against Cincinnati on Sunday night baseball and his return should boost the slumping Carlos Beltran. If you were waiting to see him return, the wait is over.

Justin Ruggiano Miami- Someone has to step in for the injured Giancarlo Stanton and so far, its Ruggiano. Emilio Bonifacio has just returned after a long absence and although they could both end up earning a spot, the situation bears watching. Four home runs, double digit RBI and a BA north of .400 over past two weeks is worthy of a long look.

Chris Carter Oakland- Has the big first baseman finally arrived? Or is he just the next Brandon Moss? Carter has five home runs in only 26 at bats and drew three walks yesterday. Carter is hitting .346 with a .435 OBP and is worthy of a pickup if he can get full time play., As it stands, he is still working mostly against left handed pitching.

Ben Sheets Atlanta- In those leagues that allow minor league or rehab pickups, Sheets is probably already gone. If you were waiting to see a start before making your move, Sunday's performance should be more than enough. Always possessing a hammer curve ball, Sheets was hitting low 90's on the radar gun which spells trouble for National League hitters.

Homer Bailey Cincinnati- Another solid performance for Bailey, allowing only one earned run over eight innings of work on Sunday night baseball against the Cardinals. Homer is 3-0 in his last three starts with a 17/3 strikeout to walk ratio while allowing only five runs. Bailey has only given up more than four runs, twice all season and may have turned the corner.

Steve Cishek Miami- We cannot let a week go by without giving you a potential source for saves. The love/hate relationship between Ozzie Guillen and Heath Bell was exposed on Showtime about the same time Bell was yanked from the closer role.... again. Cishek is a 6'6" right hander with absolutely nasty sidearm/submarine stuff. Take a chance, I did!

Clayton Richard San Diego- Another sparking performance by Richard on Saturday night, with his only mistake a two run homer by Mark Ellis. Even without run support, Richard is 3-3 over the past month with a sub 3.00 ERA, a 24/6 strikeout to walk ratio and only 34 hits allowed in 44 innings. Other than a six runs aberration against the Reds on July 7, Richard has allowed only 14 earned runs in eight starts dating back to May.

It's never too early to be prepared. Check out our 2012 Fantasy Football Player Rankings right now!!

Listen to The Fantasy Alarm Show Saturday & Sunday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM EST and Wednesday 8:00 PM EST to 11:00 PM EST on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio XM channel 87/Sirius 210.

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups: All-Star Break Edition

Happy All-Star break! With the trading deadline now on the horizon, we will begin to at least hear about proposed deals. If you are in a standard roto league, average category numbers like BA, ERA and WHIP are getting harder to move. (Although it certainly seems easy to drop in these categories, right?) You have a better chance to make a move in cumulative categories like HR, RBI, SB, W and S.

Make sure and get Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Baseball iPhone App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Jim Thome Baltimore- Was there ever a player that was a better fit for a DH? The 41 year old Thome raised many eyebrows recently during inter league play, when the Phillies put him on display for AL clubs hungry for hitting. Thome hit .333 with four home runs and 14 RBI in the DH role for Philadelphia and the audition landed him in Baltimore. The Orioles are in a pennant race and Camden fits Thome well.

Alexi Amarista San Diego- The Ruthian display by Amarista was an aberration, but anytime you can get production like that in the middle infield, you need to at least address it. Amarista was ridiculous heading into the Fourth, going 11-for-21 in a six game stretch with four home runs and eleven RBI. Amarista has cooled off considerably and is historically more a stolen base threat than a power provider.

Pedro Alvarez Pittsburgh- One of the streakiest hitters in the majors this season, I picked him up a tad too late following his first barrage of the season. The young third baseman is hot again ad will need to continue to rake if the PIrates want a rare post season appearance. Over the past week and a half, Alvarez has three homers, 15 RBI while hitting a tad under .300.

Tyler Colvin Colorado- Colvin was on my radar and jumped near the top after taking Stephen Strasburg deep.... twice. The Cubs drew impatient with Colvin, who has found new life at Coors Field. While Colvin is on pace for decent season long numbers, much damage has been done of late. How about five home runs, ten RBI and a .300 average in July alone?

Jose Quinata Chicago White Sox- This rookie southpaw has been a surprise and is certainly sneaking up on almost everyone. Quinata was lit up at Yankee Stadium at the end of June, otherwise he has been as good as anyone over his last five starts. Quinata has only allowed five earned runs in his last five starts, outside the start in New York. Eight K's each of his last two starts certainly caught my eye.

Michael Fiers Milwaukee- Another rookie who has quietly been very effective over the past month. Over this last five starts, Fiers has only given up five earned runs, never more than two in any of the five starts. Fiers has been getting stronger, with ten and nine strikeouts in his last two starts. Fiers is a solid prospect, an organization All-Star last season in Nashville.

Chris Tillman Baltimore- One of many young guns in the Baltimore organization that have yet to arrive. Tillman gave fantasy owners a little taste with a lights out performance against Seattle before getting sent back down. Tillman will return and take a turn in the rotation after the break. Mid-to-upper 90's on the radar gun last week is certainly worth a second look.

Ben Sheets Atlanta- Sheets figures to have two more Double-A starts, then if all goes well, will join the Braves rotation. Sheets has had nothing but injury concerns in his career, but is hitting 91 on the gun. If Sheets can maintain that velocity, to supplement his hammer curve ball, Atlanta could be on to something.

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups - Hitting

Pardon me for my lack of enthusiasm on the call-up of Anthony Rizzo. You see, this happened a year ago, and yours truly made a number of moves to get in position to have the left handed hitting first baseman on his roster when San Diego called him up. Rizzo was over matched, sent back down and eventually traded to the Cubs. Although I won't be chasing him this time around, the spotlight will certainly be on his Chicago debut this week.

Make sure and get Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Baseball iPhone App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Anthony Rizzo/San Diego- Rizzo is too good for Triple-A, that much we know. What we don't know is if he is major league ready. Rizzo was called up by San Diego last season after ripping Triple-A to the tune of 26-101-.331. His numbers for the Padres? A paltry 1-9-.141 in 49 games. We will begin to find out if he is ready this time around when he debuts Tuesday at Wrigley Field.

Coco Crisp/Oakland- After struggling to start the season, Crisp is coming on strong in June, hitting .330 over the past two weeks with seven steals and eight runs scored. Crisp should have a big second half, more resembling last season, where he turned a very valuable 8-54-.264 with 49 stolen bases.

Scott Rolen/Philadelphia- Does Rolen have another half season left? The Reds like Todd Frazier, but Cincinnati will give Rolen a long look, hoping for a resurgence of his 2010 numbers. Rolen has three multi-hit games since returning from the disabled list last week. A pennant race in a hitter's park could bring out the best in Rolen.

Casper Wells/Seattle- Wells returned to the Mariners lineup from Triple-A Tacoma two weeks ago and promptly reeled off a seven game hitting streak. Wells had four multi-hit games during the streak and added a home run and six RBI. With Mike Carp still out, Wells is battling Michael Saunders and Franklin Gutierrez for at bats in left and center field.

Ryan Theriot/San Francisco- Since returning from the disabled list just prior to Memorial Day weekend, Theriot has been a man on a mission to keep the second base job. Theriot with ten multi-hit games on the way to a .300 average with thirteen RBI and seven steals since his return. Theriot has the added value of eligibility at both shortstop and second base.

Jeff Keppinger/Tampa Bay- Looking to ride an infielder with a hot bat? Look no further than Jeff Keppinger. Keppinger missed a month with a broken toe, but came back in a big way, going five-for-five with three RBI against Philadelphia. Keppinger is a solid hitting middle infielder and also qualifies at third base for the Rays.

Chris Nelson/Colorado- Probably the hottest hitting middle infielder that is still available in many leagues, Nelson is hitting .360+ over the past weeks, with three home runs and eleven RBI. Nelson has been playing third, but may get more time at second base as Marco Scutaro recovers after getting hit by a Stephen Strasburg fastball on Monday night.

Ryan Kalish/Boston- The window may be small for Kalish, given the explosive return of Cody Ross and the imminent comebacks of Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury. Kalish is in the majors for the first time since 2010 after recovering from major shoulder surgery. In only 53 games, Kalish had ten steals and 24 RBI and the BoSox are grooming him as their next star.

Derrick Norris/Oakland- A key component of the multi-player trade that sent Gio Gonzalez to Washington, Norris is the future behind the plate for the Athletics. Norris was called up on Thursday for his Major League debut and on Sunday hit his first home run, a walk off shot to beat the cross-town Giants.

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups - Pitching

The choices are clear this week. For those with priority or the biggest FAAB budgets, will it be hitting and Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, or pitching and Arizona's Trevor Bauer? A fairly hearty list this week, which includes three possible sources for saves. This week's starters have been vetted, with at least two quality starts back to back, or have a track record of success.

Make sure and get Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Baseball iPhone App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Trevor Bauer/Arizona- If he isn't stashed in your league, time to roll out the free agent budget or waiver priority. Is there any chance that performance will meet the hype? Bauer makes his Major League debut Thursday night with a strict 100 pitch count limit. We do know he can dominate the minors, 11-1 with a 2.19 ERA over 15 starts across Double and Triple-A.

Franklin Morales/Boston- The one-time Colorado prospect is delivering for the first time since his rookie debut with the Rockies in 2007. Josh Beckett is about to return, but Clay Buchholz is now disabled. Morales has pitched well in two starts, limiting both the Cubs and Braves to two runs, with 17 strikeouts and only one walk in 11 innings of work.

Dallas Keuchel/Houston- Keuchel had an eye opening debut, limiting the Rangers to one run over five innings in his Major League debut. The 24 year old left hander followed that up with a complete game victory over Cleveland, the only run coming on a solo home run. Bud Norris returns from the disabled list on Thursday, which will bump someone from the rotation.

Jason Marquis/San Diego- Marquis was absolutely terrible with Minnesota, allowing 32 earned runs in 34 innings before getting shown the door. Complete turnaround at Petco Park, with four very solid starts. Marquis allowing only six earned runs over 27 innings with a 26 strikeouts and 11 walks. Size of ballpark and effects do matter.

Rick Porcello/Detroit- Back to back strong performances have landed Porcello on our radar. Porcello was saddled with the loss against the Cardinals on Wednesday, but allowed only two earned runs over seven innings of work. Monday night, Porcello had seven strikeouts in six innings, limiting the Rangers to one run and picking up the victory.

Glen Perkins/Minnesota- Who is going to pickup the slack with Matt Capps on the DL? With saves on Wednesday and Friday, it appeared Perkins might be the man, but its never easy. Our other Twins option, Jared Burton was the man Sunday and Monday, complicating the matter. Perkins has been solid all season with an ERA of 2.93 and 1.34 WHIP.

Jared Burton/Minnesota- Will the Twins rely on match ups? Working Burton when a right hander is needed and Perkins for lefties? Like Perkins, Burton has been solid as a setup man all season long. Burton has an excellent 29/5 strikeout to walk ratio in 30 innings of work, an ERA of 3.00 and minuscule 0.90 WHIP. Pick your poison.

Bobby Parnell/NY Mets- This one is much easier as we were told Parnell was the man, even before closer Frank Francisco was placed on the disabled list. Long considered a future closer for the Mets, Parnell has 31 strikeouts in 31 innings, while issuing only eight walks. Parnell has 15 holds, an ERA of 3.19 and 1.32 WHIP.

Ross Detwiler/Washington- Were you patient enough to hold on to Detwiler? I was, but I am also a Nationals fan and more importantly a big believer in Detwiler. The former first roundpick was hitting upper-90's on the gun while working middle relief. The Chien-Ming Wang experiment is over and Detwiler was sparkling in his return to the best rotation in baseball.

Chris Archer/Tampa Bay- Yet another young, promising arm in the Rays system. Considered one of baseball's premiere prospects a year ago, Archer made his Major League debut on Wednesday at Nationals Park. Archer scattered three hits over six innings, striking out seven. Has a spot while Hellickson and Niemann are sidelined.

It's never too early to be prepared. Check out our 2012 Fantasy Football Player Rankings right now!!

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups - Pitching

Have you wondered where your team would be had you acquired R.A.Dickey in your draft or auction? The knuckleballer has moved his owner into first place in my league almost single handedly. Obviusly, he is no longer available, but I just needed to vent. Some interesting possibilities this week with a pair of veterans returning, a top prospect, along with four, yes four possible targets to acquire saves. Good luck in your FA bidding on waiver moves.

Make sure and get Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Baseball iPhone App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Francisco Rodriguez Milwaukee- John Axford blew his fourth save Tuesday night and may be on the verge of losing the opportunity to close. K-Rod hasn't exactly been lights out, but his ERA is a full two runs lower. Manager Ron Roenicke had given Axford the vote of confidence, but giving up back to back jacks in the 9th with a one run lead can't help.

Jair Jurrjens Atlanta- With Brandon Beach on the DL, Atlanta is calling up Jurrjens from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Friday against Boston. Jurrjens was an All-Star last season but struggled out of the gate. Jurrjens didn't exactly excel in the minors, going 3-4 with a 5.27 ERA and 1.42 WHIP.

Joaquin Benoit Detroit- Tigers closer Jose Valverde injured his wrist Tuesday night warming up in the bullpen. While we don't know the full extent of the injury, Phil Coke closed things out for the save. While Coke will obviously get opportunities as matchups dictate, Benoit may in fact get more chances if Valverde misses extended time.

Roy Oswalt Texas- If Nolan Ryan says Oswalt is ready to join the Rangers this weekend, I take that as a sign. Oswalt has struggled at times in his minor league rehab, but is coming off his best outing on Sunday allowing two runs over six innings. Oswalt's return could come as early as Friday night.

Tom Wilhelmsen Seattle- We heard that Brandon League was getting the closer's job back in Seattle, but you certainly have to take note of Wilhelmsen striking out the side for his fifth save on Tuesday night. If you were waiting on this one, Wilhelmsen appears to be the safe play for now. 14 K's over 10 innings and five for five in save opps since taking over.

Jacob Turner Detroit- Is Turner ready? He certainly wasn't last season, getting lit up in three starts. The top arm in the Tigers organization, Turner has been solid in the minors with a 2.83 ERA over 11 starts. Turner is slated to start on Thursday, but could be sent down if Drew Smyly is ready to return from the DL next week.

Glen Perkins-Minnesota- Another injury to watch here as Twins closer Matt Capps has a sore shoulder. Perkins has been strong of late in a setup role with a 2.01 ERA in his last 24 outings covering 22 innings. Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire says Jared Burton could also close out games if Capps is sidelined.

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups - Hitting

Have we reached the dog days of Summer yet? If your team resembles mine, there are a number of areas that need a boost. What are we looking for at this point of the season? As we hurdle towards the midway point, trades, injuries and minor league call-ups make up the core of player availability.

Make sure and get Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Baseball iPhone App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Trevor Plouffe INF Minnesota- Plouffe homered in four straight games last week, including a pair Friday night against Milwaukee. Plouffe qualifes at shortstop, third base and outfield and is one of the Twins top prospects. If, by chance, he is still available in your league, you know what to do.

Ike Davis 1B NY Mets- After going 2-for-4 on Tuesday, Davis turned the corner by getting a start against nasty left hander David Price of Tampa Bay. Over his last eight games, Davis is 11-for-23 with a home run and seven RBI. Given he is still hitting only .194 on the season, this is a substantial improvement.

Casey McGehee 1B/3B Pittsburgh- Need a cornerman? Get him while he's hot! Over the past week, McGehee is 10-for-23 with two home runs and seven RBI. McGehee is going to need to maintain the pace to get time at first over Matt Hague and Garrett Jones, or at third in place of Pedro Alvarez. At a minimum, he will continue against left handers.

Tyler Moore 1B/OF Washington- With a plethora of injuries, Nationals manager Davey Johnson has done a masterful job of mixing lineups. With Jayson Werth still out and 1B Adam LaRoche battling nagging injuries, Moore has been a regular against left handers. Five hits over his last three starts, including a pair of home runs at Toronto keeps him in the picture.

Craig Gentry OF Texas- Good rule of thumb... when a Texas hitter is getting playing time and he is available, give it serious thought. Last week, we brought Cuban prospect Leonys Martin to your attention with a mention of Gentry. In five starts over last week, Gentry is 8-for-18 with three RBI and five runs scored.

Justin Maxwell OF Houston- A high draft pick by Washington, Maxwell is finally getting playing time in Houston. The Astros outfield is loaded with prospects, but Maxwell is doing his best to carve out a spot. In six starts over the last eight days, Justin is 6-for-21 with a pair of home runs and six RBI. Maxwell now has seven dingers in 111 at bats.

Brandon Moss OF Oakland- There is not a hotter hitter in baseball than Brandon Moss. The streak began with a pair of bombs at Coors Field on Tuesday and continued with home runs each of the following three games. Over the past week, Moss is 8-for-23 with five home runs and 10 RBI.

Tyler Colvin OF Colorado- After the Cubs gave up, a chance of scenery has helped Colvin. Over the last half dozen starts, Colvin is 10-for-25 with four home runs and seven RBI. Colvin is earning a regular role against right handers in a very crowded outfield populated by Carlos Gonzalez, Dexter Fowler and Michael Cuddyer.

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Pickups - Pitching

The volatile closer situation seems to have settled a bit... for now. We do have one emerging end of game prospect and the usual collection of starters who have hit a hot streak. This week's list has some good young talent that you could be catching on the front end of a break out season.

Make sure and get Fantasy Alarm's award winning 2012 Fantasy Baseball iPhone App!

Why read boxscores when you can find out everything that happened in Howard Bender's nightly Fantasy Baseball Roundup

Nate Eovaldi LA Dodgers- Called up following Memorial Day weekend from Double-A to take the spot of the injured Ted Lilly, Eovaldi has exceeded expectations. Thrust into the rotation the same day, he worked seven strong innings, allowing only a two run shot to Ryan Braun. In his second start, Eovaldi again allowed only a pair of runs, working into the seventh at Coors Field. Saturday night, he worked six scoreless innings, but was up against the Seattle no-hitter. Three quality starts is enough in my book!

Clay Buchholz Boston- On the heels of a horrible start, Buchholz has put together four excellent starts since Memorial Day. Entering this season, I thought Buchholz had the best potential for growth on the BoSox staff and he is finally proving me right. Buchholz has allowed only five earned runs over his last 31 innings of work which included a four hit shutout against Baltimore. Clay also has the strikeout pitch working with 28 K's and only six walks during the four quality starts.

Ryan Cook Oakland- Closer Alert! Closer Alert! We can't promise how long it will last, but Cook is the man.... for now in Oakland. Former closers Grant Balfour and Brian Fuentes appear slotted for setup duty as Cook gets his turn after posting 11 holds. Cook has 24 scoreless appearances this season with a two-run outburst by the Twins at Target Field the only blemish. Ryan is averaging a strikeout per inning, but 16 walks over 27 innings is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Chris Young NY Mets- After missing much of the last two seasons following shoulder surgery, Young's fastball has been clocked short of 85 on the radar gun. Not so fast my friend? On the contrary.... recent studies indicate that the 6'10" right hander's stuff more resembles mid-90's to opposing hitters due to his extended reach to the plate. In a pair of June starts, Young has worked into the sixth, allowing only two runs on the road at Nationals Park and at Tropicana Field. 15 hits allowed in ten and two-thirds is a big alarming, but we need more of a sampling to be sure.

Brian Matusz Baltimore- Matusz is the perfect example of an elite prospect who started so badly that many have written him off for good. Matusz was knocked out in the third at Fenway on Thursday, but his recent body of work is worth a look. Over five starts since he was shelled against the Rangers, Matusz allowed only ten earned runs in 31 and a third innings of work, going 4-1 in the process. Matusz posting a 28/9 strikeout to walk ratio during the May sampling. Brian was hit in the face during a bunting drill this week, but x-rays came back negative and he is not expected to miss his scheduled start.

Matt Harrison Texas- I picked up Harrison in mid-April, based on his 2011 numbers; 14-9-.3.38. After Harrison was rocked to the tune of 22 hits and 14 earned runs by Toronto and Tampa, I lost patience and dumped him. Mistake. Harrison has gone 5-1 in seven starts since, including a five hit shutout at San Francisco on Friday night. Acquired along with Elvis Andrus in the trade that sent Mark Texiara to Atlanta, you know Harrison is going to get plenty of run support. With only 16 earned runs allowed in seven starts since the second of May, don't be surprised if Harrison winds up a 20-game winner.

Clayton Richard San Diego- A key piece in the deal that sent Jake Peavy to the White Sox, Richard has never been short on potential Richard had a "breakout" season in 2010, going 14-9-3.75. Richard was headed towards a repeat performance last season until an injury limited him to 18 starts. Richard has been solid at spacious Petco Park this season but has struggled on the road. Since beating the Dodgers on May 16th, Richard is 2-2 with 14 runs allowed in nearly 40 innings of work covering half a dozen starts.

Justin Masterson Cleveland- If you can avoid the occasional disaster, Masterson can contribute to your rotation. Three starts have spoiled his overall numbers with a total of 21 earned runs allowed in starts at Seattle, Fenway and against Kansas City. Masterson has been masterful in his other ten starts, allowing only 22 earned runs in 65 and two-thirds innings of work. A big (6'6" 250) durable workhorse, Masterson has allowed half of his earned runs this season in just 15 innings across those three bad starts. Justin was solid a year ago: 12-10-3:21 and just entering his prime at age 27, could be worth the gamble.

Listen to The Fantasy Alarm Show Saturday & Sunday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM EST and Wednesday 8:00 PM EST to 11:00 PM EST on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio XM channel 87/Sirius 210.
