The Blue Jays have decided which man will handle the final frame while the Tigers are still debating how they will handle the 9th inning. Elsewhere there is all kinds of excitement. We've got one of the better hitters of his generation being arrested for a DUI. A righty is ready to sign with the Orioles and why anyone cares is beyond me. A masher in Boston, think overweight, smiley and slow on the base paths, may not be ready to play full-time once the season starts. I'll also touch on a guy who was hurt while wrestling, a hurler who might have been the worst pitcher in baseball last season and I'll share some thoughts on the latest hurler turned hitter.
On this special day in our nations history – by the way it might be more applicable for us to celebrate on July 2nd and not the 4th (see my report on why) – I'd like to extend my thanks to everyone who has ever fought for our freedoms be it with a sword, a cannon, a gun, a voice or the pen. Thanks you for giving us the freedom to do things like play fantasy baseball. Oh yeah, there's also some baseball stuff in this article too – though there really is no rhythm or reason today. I'm going to mention young hitters – guys like Brandon Belt and Ike Davis – I'll talk young callups on the hill like Chris Tillman and Trevor Bauer, and I'll also mention old guys like R.A. Dickey. Hey, what do you expect from a guy who is already four beers deep at 11 AM?
So here we are at the end of April where, for the most part, the hot starts begin to cool off and, with luck, the cold ones begin to heat up. Full-time starters have roughly 80-90 at-bats under their belt and your sample size arguments for why things are the way they are, start to dissipate. That doesn’t mean that all players are leveling off right now – some still have some work to do. Yes, Albert Pujols, I’m looking in your direction. But when you’re sitting there wondering what to do with your guys like Nolan Reimold, Jordan Schafer or Jose Altuve, watching their every move right now is key. They’re all off to hot enough starts that they have some decent trade value, but if they start to go into the tank because they’ve been playing over their head for the past month, your window of opportunity to reap some of the value in a trade will begin to close very rapidly.
The prospects continue to roll into the majors, and one of the minor's biggest boppers will be coming to California, and could possibly bring you some power help to your fantasy team. We have another star going on the paternity list, while a former near MVP looks like he might challenge for the award again.
