We all know the trade deadline is coming. We read about it constantly and spend hours tracking the rumor mill. But for some reason it never feels real or even imminent until that first day where rumors become reality and big moves start to happen. Monday was that day for MLB and for fantasy owners. What began as numerous Tweeters jumping the gun on a Cubs/Braves deal for Ryan Dempster, the day suddenly turned into a head turning “Whaaaaat?!?!?” for many of us. Here’s a look at what went down and how Monday’s deals will fall out with respect to fantasy.
When Todd Wilhelmsen closed out the ninth inning of the Mariners’ 1-0 win over the Dodgers, it wasn’t just another save chance for the 28-year old right-hander. The third and final out that he recorded put the Mariners in the MLB record books as the 10th team in major league history to throw a combined no-hitter and the second team to accomplish the feat with the most pitchers used – six – joining the 2003 Houston Astros who last threw a combined no-no against the New York Yankees. It was also the third no-hitter in Mariners history. Kevin Millwood started the action, throwing six no-hit innings, but was forced to leave the game afterwards due to a groin strain. Charlie Furbush and Stephen Pryor combined to finish the seventh inning, Lucas Luetge and Brandon League handled the eight and Wilhelmsen came in and with just nine pitches need, finished the job off with a perfect ninth.
What with the three-game slate here on Thursday and the late start, I was able to take my time a little with the Wednesday wrap. Apologies if it ruined your morning cup of coffee, having to go read somewhere else, but this could be a nice lunch break/afternoon snack for you while you waste some time at the job. Offenses were exploding on Wednesday as we saw 13 teams plate six runs or more, likely boosting the totals for numerous fantasy teams out there. Unfortunately for some, the pitching didn’t fare as well and we saw some nasty ratio damage done. Here’s a look at how everything shook out the other day.
