yu darvish

So it’s like that again, huh? Just the third day of the 2013 MLB season and we’re already staring at a perfect game? Well…..almost. Pretty damn close as Yu Darvish manhandled the Astros lineup and came just one out away from throwing baseball’s 24th perfect game and fourth in less than a full calendar year.

Oh man.  Look at this.  A guy goes away for a couple of days and look how everything falls apart.  Say it ain’t so, Bartolo.  Say it ain’t so.  I guess we all now know how, at 39 years old and 267 pounds (which is definitely lowballing),Bartolo Colon managed to post up 10 wins and a 3.43 ERA while pitching for the A’s this season.  But now,he's following in the footsteps of Melky Cabrera and sitting out the next 50 games which kisses this season goodbye as well as any chance of  a legitimate contract during the offseason.

Rounding the Bases: Mike Trout Makes History...Again

While perhaps the story of the day should be how Bartolo Colon hasn’t allowed a run in 20.2 innings, dating back to July 22, center stage again belongs to everyone’s favorite rookie, Mike Trout.  Turns out that when Trout homered off of A’s reliever Travis Blackley, he became the youngest player in MLB history to hit 20 home runs and steal 30 bases  in a single season.  Even better is that he did it on his 21st birthday!  That’s right, for the first time in his fledgling career, Trout could actually celebrate one of these milestones with a legal alcoholic beverage.  No more getting drenched with non-alcoholic sparkling cider, no more guys buying him root beers and Diet Cokes after the game.  When they say it’s Miller time, it’s actually Miller time.

Rounding the Bases: Another Year of the Pitcher? Hughes, Cahill and Sale Each Go the Distance

When Jonathon Niese started to mow down the Cardinals lineup, I was crushed that I was going to have to hype another Mets pitcher and talk about how the defending World Champs were bested for three straight games and mustered not a single run.  Well, considering he only went six innings, he’ll get an honorable mention because taking the place of Mets pitchers for today, will be Phil Hughes, Chris Sale and Trevor Cahill.  Not one, not two, but three complete games on Sunday marking yet another Year of the Pitcher it seems.  Each one put forth an incredible effort on Sunday, boosting fantasy teams with their pitching lines.

Sometimes in life, you have to know when to admit that you were wrong.  It’s okay to stand by your convictions, but when you do or say something that the world eventually finds out is wrong, you need to be man (or woman) enough to admit your misjudgment.  On the ever-so-rare occasion, this happens to me and as someone who offers up fantasy baseball advice to the masses, I like to hold myself accountable.  After all, you need to trust the source from which you’re getting your information, right?  Well, I’m building that trust with you here.

Catchers of the world, unite!  Your time is now!  The fantasy baseball community is officially warned – the catcher position is no longer an afterthought.  Grab your bid dollars, hoard those early round draft picks and get yourself a quality backstop!  They have arrived.

Rounding the Bases: Zito Gem Trumps Darvish Debut

BarryZito

Welcome to Bizarro baseball.  While the anticipated debut of Yu Darvish was on everyone’s minds on Monday, the real excitement ended up coming from a very unlikely source.  Barry Zito, the $126M albatross that hangs on the neck of the Giants organization and its fans, turned in a gutsy and vintage performance to help his team ruin the Colorado Rockies 2012 home opener.  With the Giants seeking their first win of the season, Zito turned in a complete game, four-hit shutout with four strikeouts and no walks as the Giants offense went to town and pummeled the Rockies pitching for seven runs.  Zito hurls a shutout?  The Giants offense scores seven runs in a game?  Bizarro baseball, indeed.

It is another exciting night in fantasy baseball as we wish you a happy weekend.  The weather has finally started to improve up here in the Northeast and some players are starting to see things in a sunny way. A power hitter who we all questioned is answering us in emphatic fashion, and an also ran pitcher is looking like a Cy Young Award winner. A young pitcher looks impressive this night, while an Asian important disappoints again.  One outfielder hits his first home run of the season, while another one just keeps piling up the hits. There is that news and a little bit more on the weekend edition of Rounding The Bases.
