Rounding the Bases: Machado Gets the Call, Stanton and Hamilton Power Up

It’s a little late in the season to have the same amount of impact, but it looks like the Orioles are trying to catch lightning in a bottle just as the Angels and Nationals have done with Mike Trout and Bryce Harper.  Word came down that on Thursday, the Orioles are promoting uber-prospect Manny Machado straight from Double-A to the majors.  While he is a natural shortstop, he’ll be coming up to take over at third base, a veritable black hole for Baltimore right now, both offensively and defensively.

Rounding the Bases: Greinke's Faux Milestone; Soriano, Tex, Braun and The Hammer Double Up

So the big story as we jumped into the second half of the 2012 season was that Zack Greinke became the first pitcher since 1917 to start three consecutive games for his team in one season.  Impressive?  Maybe.  I’m still sifting through data trying to find box scores and pitching lines for Red Faber, the pitcher for the White Sox who accomplished the feat back in the days of yore, but am still coming up empty.  My assumption, though, is that he threw more than eight innings in total for the three starts thus rendering Greinke’s accomplishment a pretty lame technicality more than an impressive feat.

Rounding the Bases: Pedro Alvarez, Jason Kipnis and Wrapping Up Interleague

It feels like forever ago that we started interleague play this year and finally, it is coming to an end.  This is the final week of the cross-league match-ups and then these players won’t see each other until the All Star Game and then the World Series.  I couldn’t be happier.  Aside from the baseball purist inside of me that cringes every time he hears MLB try to hype one of these match-ups, the fantasy player in me gets aggravated by the unnecessary wrinkles that it causes in our game.  If you’re in an AL-only or mixed league and rely on designated hitters like Billy Butler or David Ortiz, you suddenly lose them for a few games a week and in some cases, either have to take a zero for the day, or use up a waiver claim to get a (probable) subpar replacement for a pair of two-week stints.  Why should I lose out on either player’s power because MLB wants to make a few extra bucks?

If there’s one thing you can say about Saturday’s games, there was quite the flair for the dramatic.  It seems like every game you turned to, there was something big happening.  There were three walk-off home runs, two complete-game shutouts, Derek Jeter tied George Brett for 14th on the all-time hits list, and yet another Heath Bell meltdown.  We had more great pitching performances and plenty of offense to keep your fantasy teams juiced.  So without further ado, let’s get to the highlights…

Yes, it's true, the regular season of football is over, so now is the time to start focusing on the diamond. You may barely be over your New Year's Eve hangover, I know the seven Long Island's I pulled back on are still affecting my vision, but it's time to get to breaking down the 2012 fantasy baseball season. To do that I'll take a sweep around the landscape of the game and give some thoughts on the major players that have switched teams this offseason either by trade or through free agent signings. Did you overlook any of the moves due to drinking, lack of interest, or your intense focus on the fantasy football season?

The longer than usual opening matchups in your fantasy baseball leagues have finally come to a close and hopefully you were on the winning side.  Tonight, we continue to new format of the article where we feature some of the top performers of the night and then chronicle the news below.  I am looking for some feedback on this change whether you all think this is a good move. Tonight, we mention some guys who are playing over their heads, a superstar off to a slow start, and a young phenom coming into his own. On the pitching side there is a couple of guys under the radar and why Fernando Rodney got the save tonight.
