It’s crunch time, people. It may seem like there’s still plenty of baseball left to go in the season but before you know it, it’s going to be mid-September, there will be two scoring periods left in the fantasy season and suddenly that six-month long season….that marathon you began in April….is going to whisk by and all that time you thought you had left is going to be gone. You need to keep your focus now, more than ever.
Rounding the Bases: Howard Returns, Arroyo Deals, and Colvin & Rizzo Power Up
In the wake of hearing about rehab setbacks for both Evan Longoria and Carl Crawford, the baseball world got a little bit of good news as the Phillies finally activated first base slugger Ryan Howard on Friday and got him into the lineup immediately. The slugger had been on the shelf since the final at-bat of the Phillies final game of 2011 when he ruptured his Achilles tendon. The road to recovery was cumbersome, but he’s back now and fantasy owners that had him stashed are looking to reap the benefits as we get ready to head on into the second half of the season.
Rounding the Bases: R.A. Dickey is No Second Fiddle
Usually, you see it all in the show business world. A great comedian, a great singer, some fantastic band performs – it’s a phenomenal performance and the crowd goes absolutely nuts. A standing ovation followed up with, what could seem like an hour of straight cheers and applause. Moments like that aren’t necessarily rare, but when they happen, they stand out like a lone, bright star in a pitch black night. You never want to be the guy who follows that. Some comedian before you kills it, the pressure on you to perform up to those standards is ridiculous. One subpar joke and you’re finished. It’s the same with musical performances. If you follow one of those amazing moments, if you’re not perfect, you’re done.
Rounding the Bases: Johan Santana Throws a No-No*
Why does it not surprise me? In so many ways, too. Why does it not surprise me one bit. I’ve spent so much of this week having to discuss Mets pitching, that this was just inevitable, I guess. Johan Santana threw a complete-game shutout against the Padres last Saturday, Dillon Gee has a 1.98 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 13.2 innings over his last two starts, and R.A. Dickey has killed it in his last two outings, going 2-0 with a 0.63 ERA and 21 strikeouts. The three of them have been absolutely masterful, helping both their ballclub and fantasy owners from all over. And by “all over” I mean the greater Flushing area, because who, outside of the die-hard Mets fans living in Queens, would have these guys on their fantasy roster. I mean, really.
Rounding the Bases: Santana Shuts 'Em Down, Jeter Ties Brett and Adam Jones Cashes In
If there’s one thing you can say about Saturday’s games, there was quite the flair for the dramatic. It seems like every game you turned to, there was something big happening. There were three walk-off home runs, two complete-game shutouts, Derek Jeter tied George Brett for 14th on the all-time hits list, and yet another Heath Bell meltdown. We had more great pitching performances and plenty of offense to keep your fantasy teams juiced. So without further ado, let’s get to the highlights…

It's early in the 2012 fantasy baseball season, and that means you should exercise patience with proven performers and show only guarded optimism with formerly middling options who are off to blazing starts. Today, I'll discuss a handful of the starting pitchers who are in the news and give my thoughts if you should be buying, or selling, base on their starts in 2012.

It's been two weeks, but everyone loves to panic. It's in our nature. Something goes wrong, and we immediately start looking for a quick fix (think of all the weight loss pills out there when the best course of action would just be to eat well and exercise). Fantasy baseball is no different and the start to the season has led to a whole lot of consternation over names like Tim Lincecum, Francisco Liriano, Johan Santana and Mark Melancon. I'll address all of those arms. I'll then wrap the piece up by focusing on something near and dear to me – numbers. What numbers have stood out to me in the early going? Read on to find out.

We have entered the final month of the season boys and girls and we are heading down the home stretch. It seems like with all of the minor league callups this season, the date of September 1st didn't mean as much this year. However, we will talk about the one big prospect that was called along with what we think he can bring you in the last weeks of the year. There is also news on two of his injured teammates, a rehabbing pitcher across town, and a catcher in Bean Town. Welcome to the very special Hurricane Irene Edition of the Tuesday Top Ten. Just days after many in the northeast felt the rumble from the earthquake, we were subjected to Hurricane Irene and all of its aftermath. Before you start thinking the end of the world is near because of all these natural disasters, just remember that Adam Dunn and Mark Reynolds both struck out three times since you began reading this article, so all is right in the world again.
