And we’re back! Nothing like a little holiday weekend to throw you off your schedule, huh? Hopefully you used your time over the weekend wisely and stayed on top of things rather than fall into the usual traps and miss a day or two of the news and events. All too often we see people “check out” for the weekend and the next thing they know, they’ve lost two guys to injury, another gets demoted to Triple-A, they’ve missed out on two different rookie call-ups and the early games on Monday come and they haven’t adjusted their lineup. It may only be one week, but that’s how it all starts. That’s how your lead in the standings starts to dwindle and all that you built starts to come down.
Rounding the Bases: The Forgotten
For two straight years, Dee Gordon, son of former All Star reliever Tom Gordon, was listed among Baseball America’s top 50 prospects thanks to a slick glove in the field and blinding speed on the base paths. He got his first taste of the big leagues back in 2011 and over a 56 game span that saw him come to the plate 233 times, Gordon hit .304 with 34 runs scored and 24 stolen bases. But in 2012, when he was given the starting shortstop gig to open the season, Gordon struggled mightily at the plate. Yes, he swiped 32 bases over 87 games, but he also hit just .228 and had a woeful .280 on-base percentage. He was shipped back down to Triple-A and his overall fantasy value took a hit. And when the Dodgers traded for Hanley Ramirez and announced that he would play shortstop in 2013, Gordon became even more of a forgotten man as there was, obviously, no room for him on the big league roster. Well guess what? He’s baaaaaaaaack!
Rounding the Bases: Do Early Season Starts Mean What You Think?
We've played less than three weeks of major league baseball in the 2013 season. Some folks in the fantasy game seem to think we've played 13 weeks. People are panicked over the slow starts of Matt Kemp and Jason Heyward. Others are ready to anoint guys like Jeremy Guthrie and Chris Johnson as superstars in the making. The truth obviously lies somewhere in-between (hopefully that was obvious to you because it certainly isn't for some based upon the interactions I've had with folks). In today's article we'll explore some hot and cold starts and give a few thoughts about the trends we have witnessed to this point of the season. We'll also try and make sense of why the Dodgers continue to hold down one of their best prospects for the junk that they are throwing out there in the infield.
Rounding the Bases: Carlos Lee Heads to Miami and Other 4th of July Fantasy Fireworks
Well I hope everyone had a happy and safe 4th of July on Wednesday. Nothing better than skipping out on work (not that you had to be there, I hope), grilling up some burgers and dogs, enjoying some late night fireworks and, of course, a full day and night of baseball. Plenty of action that started nice and early with the Giants and Nationals and wrapped up late with some Padres and Diamondbacks. Bu the real baseball fireworks came out of Houston when word broke that the Astros finally traded Carlos Lee. No, not to the Dodgers like everyone thought would ultimately happen, but to the Miami Marlins. In exchange, they received third base prospect Matt Dominguez and left-handed pitcher Rob Rasmussen. Overall, it looks like a deal that works for everyone.
Rounding the Bases: Zimmerman, Plouffe and All Star Selection Sunday
The biggest news coming out of baseball this weekend was the announcement of the All Star rosters for the upcoming mid-summer classic next week. And while I’d love to sit here and debate the selections and the snubs with you, I’ve realized, over time, that it’s pointless. For every guy I think doesn’t belong, five people will tell me that he does and vice versa. Sometimes the whole process can be so subjective that rarely will you ever have even just two people agree upon a set of rosters completely.
Rounding the Bases: Dexter Doubleheader and the Strikeout Sale in Tampa
Doubleheaders can be a tricky business for fantasy owners. If you own players starting in a twin-billing, there’s nothing worse than opening up your live scoring page and seeing a big, fat 0-for-8, or worse in some cases. Right off the bat, you know it’s a batting average/OBP killer for you and you just have to sit and hope that someone else in your lineup had one of those 4-for-5 days just to help take the sting out of it. On the other side of the coin, there’s that jubilant feeling you get in your belly when you pop that live scoring page open and see a 6-for-8 followed by a whole slew of baseball abbreviations. Sometimes you see multiple home runs, sometimes it’s one of everything, and sometimes, in points leagues, it’s the bonus for a grand slam or hitting for the cycle. Sink or swim. Feast or famine. The doubleheader can be your best friend or your worst nightmare. But I’ll take my chances with it every time.
Rounding the Bases: Braun Hot, Gordon Not & Berkman Hurt
Lance Berkman may or may not be done fore the rest of the 2012 season, we're just not sure yet. Ryan Braun --- so much for the concerns that he wouldn't be able to produce this season because of the off the field stuff that was swirling around him. Dee Gordon has been awful this season, so much so that he's lost his spot in the Dodgers order. Who is likely to hit atop the lineup? Roy Oswalt wants to pitch for a contender near his Mississippi home. He might get his wish. I'll also give you three names of players who have been tearing it up at the dish the past two weeks.
Rounding the Bases: Fantasy Baseball's Easter Sunday Edition
“Wait, wait, wait….whaaaat? What’s today? Easter? Really? Well did they know it was the first weekend of baseball when they made it Easter? Oh, really? It was Easter before it was baseball? Hmmm. Yeah, I don’t know about that, but ok, I guess.”
July 30th: Trade Deadline Looms!
The trade deadline is less than 24 hours away and the deals, or rumors of deals, are starting to fly in. We have a number of them here tonight, and the fantasy ramifications of the guys being dealt on both sides, and sometimes the ones left behind from the teams making the deal. There is also talk of a rookie in the Pacific Northwest who is kicking butt, and a Yankee pitcher just recalled who is showcasing his skills to potentially be traded. There are going to be a bunch of moves over the next day so you have to keep tabs on them all so you know how they all will impact your team. Tuesday Top Ten Fantasy Baseball Headlines
It is hard to believe, but it is Tuesday once again which means it is time for the Top Ten list of newsworthy fantasy baseball happenings. The calendar has turned to June and the fantasy baseball season has entered its tenth week. Time seems to fly by when you are having fun or checking the waiver wire to fill the void left by an injured player. That being said, let's dive right into the Tuesday Top Ten list and see what is crack-a-lacking.
