The fine fantasy action was as abundant on Friday as the night was long and arduous. The Giants and Cardinals were postponed due to tornado warnings in the St. Louis area, the Rays and Indians were delayed by rain for nearly five hours and the Blue Jays and Padres played til the wee hours of the night/morning to finish off a 17-inning extravaganza. We saw old-timers shine, young bucks play like seasoned veterans and we saw some early season strugglers finally emerge from their statistical cocoon. While it wasn’t the offensive fiesta we saw just a couple of nights ago, this one was still jam-packed with plenty of excitement that had fantasy owners on the edge of their seats.

Rounding the Bases: Why You Don't Chase the Ace

Offense first – that’s what they say. Pitching may win championships in the real world, but this is fantasy baseball we’re talking about and in fantasy, it is a dominant offense that wins it for you. It’s said so many times that you would think it would be ingrained in people’s heads by now, yet we still see starting pitchers get taken in the first round and people reaching for “aces” faster than they really should. It’s an age old debate that leaves most scratching their heads as to how and why it is still even up for discussion. Well, if there were ever a day to prove the point for the pro-offense side of the argument, it was Sunday.

And just like that, after the long, cold winter, the MLB season is back in full force and the fantasy baseball season has officially begun. Happy Opening Day to you all. Worth the wait? I’d say so. We got a nice, little taste on Sunday night as the Astros won their very first game as an American League team and then Monday was just one of those days that made you feel like a little kid all over again. We saw some great baseball played with the promise of so much more to come.

Sometimes we make too big a deal about Spring Training. Sometimes we don't make enough of a deal about Spring Training. If you're confused don't worry. The Oracle is here to put everything in perspective for you. The Brewers' ace is good to go as he's overcome an injury. The Dodgers and Phillies aces are struggling, but you shouldn't be too concerned. The Padres hope to have a one time elite prospect in their rotation early in the year. A once time power lefty is trying to revive a once thought to be dead career. The Tigers have zero certainty about how they are going to handle the 9th inning. The Yankees have a battle on their hands for the 5th starter role. Who will emerge with the job? Read on to find out.

Rounding the Bases: Mike Trout Makes History...Again

While perhaps the story of the day should be how Bartolo Colon hasn’t allowed a run in 20.2 innings, dating back to July 22, center stage again belongs to everyone’s favorite rookie, Mike Trout.  Turns out that when Trout homered off of A’s reliever Travis Blackley, he became the youngest player in MLB history to hit 20 home runs and steal 30 bases  in a single season.  Even better is that he did it on his 21st birthday!  That’s right, for the first time in his fledgling career, Trout could actually celebrate one of these milestones with a legal alcoholic beverage.  No more getting drenched with non-alcoholic sparkling cider, no more guys buying him root beers and Diet Cokes after the game.  When they say it’s Miller time, it’s actually Miller time.

Rounding the Bases: HanRam/Wandy New Homes, Hamels Loaded, Dempster Homeless?

Hanley Ramirez will be switching coasts as he has been dealt to the Dodgers. What type of player is the club from L.A. getting? Wandy Rodriguez escaped Houston and now has a chance at making the playoffs... with the Pirates (who knew?). Cole Hamels realized that the grass isn't always greener on the other side as he signed a massive deal to remain in Philadelphia. Ryan Desmpter's trade status is still in major limbo with the Braves looking like they might be out of the mix. Finally, some news on what is going on with the guys on the diamond including a slugger being released, another saying his rehab is going well, and a speedster whose value on the way up after one of the greatest hitters in baseball history broke his hand.

With the July31st non-waiver trade deadline rapidly approaching, we’ve been seeing a few deals pop up recently that obviously have some effect on the fantasy baseball world.  It’s not like we’ve seen any real big blockbusters that are sending owners into some panicked frenzy, but, rest assured, those will certainly be coming soon.  For now though, there are some that are having a bit of an impact that we should probably be taking a look at as they are happening.  So let’s just do a quick rundown here and see what’s been going on.

It was just 17 days ago when Philip Humber stepped onto the mound for the White Sox and took his place in baseball history forever when he threw the league’s 21st perfect game.  27 up, 27 down.  No hits and no walks.  Utter perfection.  He will have that moment for the rest of his life and the story of how he perfectly disposed of the Seattle Mariners on that fateful Saturday night will be passed down from generation to generation in the Humber family.

Welcome to the very special Earthquake Edition of the Tuesday Top Ten.  If you didn’t hear the news, most of the east coast and regions out to Ohio experienced a 5.9 earthquake this afternoon at 1:51 PM.  Clearly the reason for this is the fact that the Oakland A’s are in New York tonight to play the Yankees.  Apparently they brought the San Andreas Fault with them on their charter plane.  As a forewarning, there are absolutely no earthquake jokes or puns contained in this edition of the Top Ten.  I thought it would be in poor taste to mock or defame the memory of John Tenta, otherwise known as Earthquake in the WWF.  Remember when he squashed Jake Roberts’ snake and then made python burgers out of its remains?  Now, without further adieu, here is this week’s edition of the Tuesday Top Ten fantasy baseball headlines for August 23, 2011.
