Talk about not living up to the hype. Here we are making all sorts of preparations for impending trades at the deadline and we got the squeak of a mouse instead of the roar of a lion. BOOOOOOORIIIIIIING! What a disappointment. With all the names bandied about in discussions and all the possibilities we could have seen from contenders looking to add a few missing pieces to the puzzle, we got bupkus. Diddley-squat. Sure, there were a couple of things which I’ll discuss right now, but all in all, I’d say this was a very disappointing season for deals. The only hope we can have now is that a ton of big named, high-priced guys clear waivers over the next month and we get just a little bit more action. In the meantime, here’s the fantasy recap of those ho-hum deals we did witness.
So we’ve been talking about the calm before the storm with regard to the upcoming trade deadline, but the storm is actually much bigger than just trades as we’ve been hit with more talk of Biogenesis suspensions and even more injuries. This has all the earmarks of being a very tumultuous week, so you’ll need to pay attention now more than ever. There’s a lot of unrest you’re going to have to deal with so let’s look at a few news items and then hit the stats from Sunday.
It was a big day in the Bronx for the New York Yankees and their fans on Thursday as Derek Jeter, the Captain…their Captain…made his 2013 season debut after missing nearly the entire first half with a broken ankle. The wait would have been a bit shorter had doctors not found a small crack in the bone near the original break during his recovery, but his return was forced back to the All Star break because of it. For the most part, fantasy owners waited patiently, stashing Jeter on their DL despite the fact that he’s 39-years old and on the downside of an historic career. He had a bit of resurgence last season, but expectations couldn’t have been that high given his age and the severity of the injury.
