It has been a long time my friends but it feels good to be back here rounding up another sultry night of baseball. We still don't have an end to the NFL lockout but that is probably a good thing since temperatures around the country move past the 100 degree threshold and that would be pretty unhealthy for running two a days in full pads. Anyways, while my partner Ryan Hallam is off frolicking around Citi Field I am left to wonder how in the hell Curtis Granderson has 26 HR's already this season and even more surprising is Jacoby Ellsbury who hit is 14th and 15th HR's today. With that, let's take a stroll through tonight's fantasy baseball highs and lows.
The biggest loss of the evening didn't come at the hands of the San Diego Padres who defeated the Marlins 14-3 but rather on a play at home plate in Arizona in which Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew broke his right foot. While it's true that Drew has been struggling for much of this year, this injury pretty much puts him on the shelf for the rest of the season. I expect minor league hot prospect Cody
Carlos Gomez showed some flashes earlier on this season but he will now miss some time due to a broken clavicle suffered in tonight's game against the Diamondbacks. Gomez had lost his starting centerfield job to Nyjer Morgan awhile ago but still had been able to muster 15 steals and 31 runs scored for the Brew Crew. The guy is crazy talented but just can't seem to put it all together all at once.
The Tigers made news today when they traded for Wilson Betemit of the Royals in exchange for two minor leaguers. Betemit has already been named as the Tigers starting third baseman going forward as the team finally designated fan favorite Brandon Inge for assignment. Inge has been terrible this season hitting just 177/.242/.242 with 1 HR and 17 RBI while looking slower and older than his 34 year old frame would suggest. Betemit on the other hand is a very underrated hitter who has been very productive this season hitting .281/.341/.409, 3 HR, 27 RBI, 29 runs for the Royals. It was a move that had to be made as the Tigers are right in the thick of it in the AL Central and cannot wait for players to start hitting.
It hasn't taken Ryan Braun long to regain his form after sitting out 10 days due to an injured left leg. Braun homered twice tonight to give the Brewers the win 5-2 over the Diamondbacks. It will be a lot of fun to watch what the Brewers can do down the stretch this season and even better to watch great hitters like Braun and Prince Fielder make a run for the title.
