Jeremy Guthrie SP Kansas City- If you are looking to ride a hot hand... look no further. Guthrie held the White Sox hit-less into the 7th on Sunday, allowing only two unearned runs in seven and two thirds. Guthrie has been masterful since getting bounced for six runs at Seattle on July 27th. In four starts since, Guthrie has allowed only three earned runs and 17 hits in 29 innings of work. Guthrie also has an impressive 23/5 strikeout to walk ratio in August.
Hisashi Iwakuma SP Seattle- Since moving into the rotation on the second of July, Iwakuma has been a Seattle secret. Iwakuma has allowed only 17 earned runs in eight starts, with an impressive 41-17 strikeout to walk ratio. Iwakuma's success as a starter comes despite having to make a trip to Japan to spend time with his ailing Father. Seattle gambled with a one year, incentive laden contract with Iwakuma after a solid season overseas.
David Phelps SP NY Yankees- Who is this guy? The 25 year old had been working out of the bullpen, when given a chance in the rotation with CC Sabathia on the DL. Phelps has posted a pair of solid starts, allowing five earned runs on 13 hits in 12 innings of work. Phelps has struck out ten and walked only one. In 63 innings this season, Phelps has an ERA of 2.69 and a 1.15 WHIP.
Kris Medlen SP Atlanta- Another reliever turned starter, Medlen joined the Braves rotation at the end of July and has won all four starts. In 26 innings, Medlen has allowed 19 hits and only three earned runs. An impressive 19-3 strikeout to walk ratio should land him on your watch list. Medlen takes the hill on Wednesday at Washington in a crucial series between NL East contenders.
Kyle Kendrick SP Philadelphia- As the Phillies dismantle a high-priced, aging squad, Kendrick appears a prime candidate to remain in the rotation during the transition. The 27 year old right hander has posted back to back gems, not allowing an earned run in 15 innings of work. Kendrick struck out 13 in the two starts, while walking only one. Kendrick, along with Cole Hamels and Vince Worley figure atop the Phils new look rotation in '13.
Luis Cruz SS LA Dodgers- Cruz has really helped ease the pain without Dee Gordon. In 38 games, Cruz has four home runs, 25 RBI and a .286 average, Although Cruz had excellent numbers in Triple-A when called up, he was expected to be a stop gap. Cruz can also fill in at 2B and 3B as the Dodgers continue to work Hanley Ramirez at both SS and 3B. As for Gordon, he continues to recover from torn thumb ligaments, but isn't expected back until September.
Leonys Martin OF Texas- If you are like me, you saw the Texas transaction and were hoping it was going to be the call-of of Jurickson Profar. Martin continues to bounce back and forth between AAA and the Rangers,. Texas is very high on the 24 year old Cuban who has played very well at AAA, but has struggled in brief appearances in the majors. At Round Rock of the Pacific Coast League, Martin is hitting .344 with five home runs, 22 RBI and seven steals in 31 games.
DJ LeMahieu 2B Colorado- The second time around has proven to be the charm for LeMahieu. In late Spring, LeMahieu hit .205 in 19 games before getting sent back down to Triple-A, Colorado Springs. LeMahieu was called back up in mid-July, but served mostly as a utility infielder. LeMahieu got his shot on August 8th, when he was inserted into the starting lineup. In ten starts since, LeMahieu hit his first home run and has collected five RBI. In 33 at bats since moving into a starting role, LeMahieu has been white hot with 15 hits.
